Oh dear god . . .

To answer the original question, Oleander and Ricinus are readily found here in So-Cal.

I'll bet Thevetia barely missed the list.

I was at HD a few years ago when I saw a woman pluck a flower off a Oleander tree & hand it to a toddler in a stroller. When I approached her & told her about the flower she looked at me like "mind your own business", but snatched it away when I turned around. Oleander are all over in South Florida, yet I never heard of anyone getting ill from them.

While solid proof is lacking, it is thought that the sap from oleander can poison the soil near by.. In it's native habitat, the sap can leave a salt- like crust below plants growing near dried up rain pools.

As for Rosary Pea.. Nasty stuff.. Abrin is no joke.

Surprised many of the Euphorbias made his list. Barely touching your eyes, after getting the sap of a few species on your hand can blind you.

Notice the title says deadliest, not necessarily the most poisonous, I would imagine few people are shoving their mouth full of oleander and dying. Which plant actually kills the most people every year? Could it be the beloved coconut? by dropping nuts on people's heads?

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

When you consider how deadly and ubiquitous oleander is, it's a miracle we don't have more deaths each year. Personally, I think it's because little children most likely to eat it, can't get to to it, and don't see it as something to eat. I'd worry a lot more about Ricinus seeds, that look like little beads.

Oleander is very popular with horses as a (unintentional) last meal. Accordingly, the City of Norco, in Riverside County outlawed the planting of oleander. http://www.stupidlaws.com/growing-oleander-flowers-is-illegal/ (I don't think it's a stupid law.) It's also banned by many Home Owner Associations.

I'd worry a lot about hemlock because of its resemblance to wild carrot, which is edible.

Be careful out there. Mommy always said "Don't eat it unless it's food." In other words, something Mommy gave you.
