This one is near the house and was in bud when I arrived. It is great to be here long enough to see it open.

Nicely fragrant too.

The good rain yesterday will likely trigger some buds on other orchids but I will miss the chance to see them open.

Next September though....post-4111-0-95179000-1422095749_thumb.jppost-4111-0-25752800-1422095863_thumb.jp

Just a few more open today but lots more will set buds after the rain last night.

So nice to just tie them to trees and do nothing. In Virginia I must check diligently for pets, repot, water, fertilize, divide, etc. Here, tie them to trees and take photos when they bloom. Oh, occasionally retie if needed or move if the host tree dies but that's about all. Labels do get lost though.

We're having a nice orchid winter in Florida. This Cattylea hybrid has been on a laurel oak trunk for only a year, and has flowered twice. There's no excuse not to plop them, and Oncidiums, in trees. They're cheap, grow fast, and can become luxuriant, amounting to airborne shrubbery.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F
USDA 1990 hardiness zone 9B
Current USDA hardiness zone 10a
4 km inland from Indian River; 27º N (equivalent to Brisbane)

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

Gorgeous Cattleya! None like that on the trees here since I'm back in frigid Virginia! Good thing I have a greenhouse at least!

Nice little dainty flowers. This was growing on a Sabal domingensis but got too shaded and it stopped flowering. Its wired to the trunk of a Copernicia hospita now where it seems to be getting enough sun. Unfortunately only blooms once a year.

Beautiful photos folks and your orchids look very healthy too!

Thanks so much for sharing them. Amazing what nature can do along with some help from hybridizers with a vision!

This one has been growing on the trunk of this Hyophorbe verschaffeltii for eight years and has never flowered - until this week

It was a gift to me from a local orchid collector. Don't know what it is, the tag disappeared about 5 years ago.
