Trip to the Inland Empire, California

Traveled to my old place of residence a week ago Sunday.

Back in 1986 I moved to Highland, just east of the city of San Bernardino, in San Bernardino county.

First, an ad for Corona Beer in 7-11, in La Habra, as I bravely sally forth.

On my sortie.

I rented this house in 1990-1992 in Riverside, just uphill from the University of California, Riverside. Spent the first night of the great freeze of 1990 in the back screened in porch. (In a downy sleeping bag, brrrr.)

Those queen palms were all planted as 1 gallon plants in about 1991.

Roared off to San Bernardino. The Final Frontier. Next stop, the desert, high or low, take your pick.

Here's a typical home and garden in the flatland areas. Riverbottom silt. Rich as [fill in your name]. Best soil, ever, period. Ancient Egyptians will concur. So will modern ones. If you can't garden here, you are probably already dead.

Over all is the mountains.

Yeah, yeah, up north they have the Sierras. But still, we ain't in Ohio no more, huh-uh.

Note the snow on top. In the evenings, the snow covered tops blaze in the fire of the setting sun, while the valley is wreathed in dark shadows below. Okay, so I use that a lot. If you saw, you would, too.

Every place else I've lived in California, the mountains were far off in the distance. Here, they were right there.

Here's the first house I owned in California.

I hate that concrete, but the guy left the palms. They were planted the day after I moved in, before I unpacked, or put the new seat on the john.

  • 4 months later...

My old house was at the base of the Bunya Mountains, the only place in the world where the Bunya Pines grow naturally. I used to love getting up in the rainforest and collecting the enormous cones from them. The 'nuts' inside the cones are delicious. It was a great place to take visitors to see as well. Also if you took some bird seed and held in your open hand, the lovely King Parrots and Crimson Rosellas would fly down out of the forest and sit on your arms and eat the seed. Now you have me all nostalgic.

Peachy

I came. I saw. I purchased

Yes, I did.

Gnarly old ones that needed a home in the ground right then. The rest is history. Or rapid growth.
