The real question is why isn't the media covering this? Go to CNN or MSNBC for example. Nothing. I know why...

The problem this shows is that we are vulnerable to computer hack attacks. Not only personally but as a nation and a civilization. If one company can be literally shut down and immobilized, what happens if there are concerted hacks everywhere? What happens if the hacks enter every facet of society, attacking just a few dozen institutions? It could literally stop the country from working by just a few dozen people sitting in their underwear, at their computer in their mother's basement.

We are entering a new phase of the cyber world.

I think Mark Cuban is on to something. Here's one of his new companies. Fully encrypted texts that will suppossedly never hit a server or hard drive that will (or can) save them. 100% secure. 24 seconds and deleted forever. Notification if a screen shot is taken within that time.

Plenty of coverage at NY Times. Local theater has had a big display for the movie, and still has it listed for opening on Christmas, along with Unbroken, Into the Woods, Wild, Gambler, and BIG EYES. The hacking looks like a huge mess for Sony.

NYT: "In one email, Mr. Hirai approves a newly altered assassination shot that had “no face melting, less fire in the hair, fewer embers on the face and the head explosion has been considerably obscured by the fire.”"

Dean, it still doesn't stop someone from screen capping. Just like snapchat, people found out those Sexting photos could still be saved using third party apps or software.

Oh, my.

That film about Mr. Kim sounds like a doozy.

"Edgy"? I guess i'll have to go see it, if it comes out. Sounds like Sony wasn't just swimming with the crocodiles, but bidding one to open its mouth for everyone to leap inside.

If you read through the info and FAQs you can see he has thought this through as well as it could be. Regarding screen captures.

Does Cyber Dust prevent screen shots?

Currently, Cyber Dust users cannot take screenshots. Cyber Dust users on iOS devices can take screenshots, as it is a function of the device that cannot be modified. HOWEVER, you will still be notified on Android devices if an iOS user takes a screenshot AND all content on both platforms is disassociated from the username. There is no proof of who said what even in the event that somebody takes a screenshot.

So it sounds to me that to steal your communication it would have to be someone you sent it to, who was on an iOS device, and did it within 24 seconds, and then you would be made aware that they did steal it. Plus there would be no evidence in the screen shot of who it was from. A bit more secure than email.

I really don’t know just like the rest of everybody else. But I don’t think they will get fired, it’s a doggie dog world in business.

But I do believe that Sony brought this problem onto themselves by making the movie to kill a leader. What would happen if another country made a movie about killing our own president. We would all be up in arms about it. I’m sure the movie isn’t as bad as it sounds but I could see why another country wouldn’t like it.

This is really a cyber security issue--not, "How is Sony gonna be, in the end?". Target got hit and so did another retailer--this is just the dawn of the establishment of new securities. Until the big Triangle fire in New York, we didn't make a big deal out of worker safety. Soon, cyber security will get caught up with the hackers and another big business will be.

As for all the naked celebrities--stop getting upset when people want to see you! You made the deal to be famous and that's just part of the deal...

Big money is also made on video sales/rentals. And while I had absolutely no intention of ever seeing this film, I am going to have to rent it now when it becomes available - probably soon, because I hear it is awful.

But how better to stick it to No Korea than to make it a big seller?

Sony is considering making its film available as "Video on Demand" (VOD) instead of releasing it in theatres.

Up to now, the only movies to go to VOD have been small "indy" films. Theater owners won't carry films on VOD.

This is a big film and if it's a success on VOD it might mean that the theaters are nailing their own coffins. Maybe this could change the business in ways unexpected but entirely forseeable.

I would believe caving to terrorist demands is a critical mistake! It gives them more resolve to push even harder in the future!

I also think it is not wise to produce any movie, comedy or not, about assassinating any current leader of any nation. Would we like if a Russian movie producer did the same with our presidents? We should be allowed to produce such movies. The fall out of such entertainment Sony should have expected!!!

I haven't been to a theater since 1997 but I was going to see this movie. I don't want to see the movie. I was going to see it to show American resolve! I refuse to let terrorist create fear in me in my homeland...

Sony should release the film on the Internet for free. This ensures maximum audience considering the hype, and NK can't do a thing about that then. And, show it in all the theaters in South Korea simultaneously. Haha.

Probably not going to happen though. The perps could then release the information they stole that will be so damaging to Sony and their executives that it may shut down the company.

I think major Internet backbone carriers should just firewall NK IP addresses off the net. The general population there can't access the Internet anyway.

They already released stuff that should be damaging. The media won't report it! It is crazy to me the comments by execs Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin seemed to have been swept under the rug.

As far as IPs, it is useless to firewall class c/b's because hackers never come in from those IP ranges, they come in from hacked computers found around the world. They leap from through so many it is almost impossible to trace it back to the original IP.

Yes, I know that, but it will make the command and control of those hacked computers more difficult, as they would then have to do that from another country.

Plus, seems that they like western entertainment.

If Sony puts the film on VOD, might have a "Interview" viewing party to poke Mr. Kim in the eye at Shangri La Habra.

"Streisand effect" could be replaced by "Kim effect." In other words, efforts to force something down end up forcing it up (way up) instead.

How'd that be for a hoot?

I read that Mitt Romney had tweeted an interesting suggestion.

Sony should offer it for free on the web and then ask for a $5 donation for each viewing to be donated to the Fight Ebola Fund Raising. I would be curious to see how such a strategy would be received.

Na wouldn't hurt state funded hackers at all. The only way to damage them is to have ASO and ICANN remove all their blocks. That will never happen. Even if major backbones blocked their range it wouldn't stop let's say China from not doing anything and all those Chinese compromised computers would still be open for business. The only thing blocking ranges will do is help prevent normal North Korean users from doing stuff discussed in the article you linked.

Plus you have to think Sony already blocked all those IPs. Part of the integrated security strategies is to block high risk ranges by default. We had a list hundreds of Class Cs we firewalled across our hundreds of severs. We still had servers hacked.

Back in the golden era of spam before the algorithms now used were developed the way we combated spam to our clients was to block entire Class Bs. Never even slowed it down. The crooks just had access to an unlimited supply of compromised servers to flush spam through. Just as state funded groups would have.

On a side note, it is pretty scary to think what the Chinese or Russians could do to us if a conflict broke out. And of course you know what we could do to them as well. When the most protected entities in the world stil get hacked it should really scare people into realizing the hackers will always be one step ahead. They have been since the birth of the Internet.
