Great day out at Darren's today for the BPACs Christmas gathering, fabulous lunch and guided tour of Darren's enormous property of majestic cycads and other plants. It is in "beginnings" stage so should be fantastic to visit once again in a few years. Wonderful to see everyone get there and always a treat to catch up. Many of Darren's african cycads had been affected by frost last Winter with severe burning but already showing signs of coming back to form.

Some people pics:

Predominantly a cycad affair, with some rare species on show.

That minus 5 degrees C frost bite really burned, but these guys will be back. Already showing signs of return with new flushes here and there.

Spray of photos. Darren's knowledge on cycads, particularly the Encephalartos group is second to none. The tour moves on, many acres to cover.

A rare sight on Mister Cycads property were the odd palm tree. A Bismarkia, Andy double checks, and a lonely metallica palm resides in Brom Gully, one of the many interesting garden areas Darren is working and building on.

This was an interesting sight, a flood had passed by, seemingly, and the hammock was swamped under the earth, I wasn't game to see whether anyone had been sleeping in it when it happened.

We finished with a raffle again, some very cool plants went home to some lucky recipients.

A wonderful relaxing day, I'm not trying to plug for membership here, but I feel lucky to be part of a palm and cycad society. It is very unique and a truckload of fun.

Here's where Darren is developing a Mexican garden, a great idea and once these plants grow it will be a fabulous botanical marvel for the cycad fans.

Look another palm down the brom gully way, a sneaky triangle palm if ever there was one.

Another hill of cycads will only look enormous and brilliant with time, and no frost please.

Actually two of the folk did eat Roo snags, no BBQ shots though Ron, we were eating, BBQ'd prawns and Fillet steak and homemade salads was my course and never ending desserts, a great time, hoping Daryl might post some pics.

Here's a couple of photos from Darren's...as you can see by Wal's photos, the area that Darren lives in is very hot and dry compared to the more coastal or mountainous regions of SE Queensland...ideal for Cycads, Succulents etc

Encephalartos spp were planted everywhere ...lots of nice blue shades, although very prickly!

Scattered all over Darren's property were Meat Ant colonies...identified by the large mounds of gravel that they create...they have a bit of a bite to them...so you don't walk on the mounds!
