Thats one of the few palms I would recommend to everyone in So Cal. I have 2 of them, one is quite large already and it has been a very easy grow and quite beautiful.

Josh, this is a palm that grows as fast in So Cal as in Florida, you just need to plant it in the ground young.

Hi Gary, I have one in the ground and it is finally starting to move. I stuck it it the ground as a 2 leaf 1 gal seedling. It's now about 3' tall and starting to fatten up a bit.

I didn't know that this species growth rate here in California is the same as South Florida's?

Most NC's grow as fast or faster.

Matty B and I have some close to trunking now. Maybe 10 years from seed? They need more sun then Louis gives it is my guess.

Mine is too shaded... but is about 6 foot tall... AND the only species I have planted TWO of!

I also think Louis' is a different variety..

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

His did look a little like the mysterious purple crownshafted form Bill, but a few years ago I saw a more recent update and it looks like ours we are growing. Dave, do you have any recent photos of Louis? Love to see one now that is is trunking.

Here's a pic I took of Louis' about 5 years ago. I'm not sure if it's a purple variety or if the deep shade has influenced its coloration.

I think mine grew faster when it got more sun. Now that the canopy has filled in it seems to have slowed down a bit.

Anyway, more importantly, someone should jump on Josh's palms for sale. These things grow great for us in SoCal and they are structurally beautiful.

Alas this seems to be very true, not fast anywhere in cultivation, perhaps even in New Caledonia ?

I would have to be a massive bag to hold all that humidity - that's what you guys need plus 40 inches of rain a year - you would kick butt growing big palms fast.

The Hoopers' palm is in deep shade, under the overhang of their inner courtyard garden.

I'll ask again, need to pay a visit. (They didn't get to the banquet, hope Louis' okay . . . :hmm: )

For what it's worth, I've committed near-criminal neglect against some "pyries" and they're fine. I think the Hoopers' plant is a different species, too, based on the coloration.

On my wish list, Jeff Marcus said, in one of his videos, that he thinks it might be even more cold tolerant than Oliviformis.
