hello

I just came back , with my friend Jean- Pierre, a trip to Andasibe where we had the chance to visit four different reserves. One or maybe two of them had
probably never been prospected for palms

We saw amazing things , some very rare, and perhaps even some unknown ... ; And we even found the Dypsis Black Stem in its natural habitat, which i think, had never been seen before !!!

So a little patience, photos coming soon ...

Awesome! Just living the dream. Spending your days exploring virgin Madagascan forest, unearthing new Dypsis species. I want in. Where do I sign?!

I haven't seen any of the black-stemmed Dypsis with single trunks before; they've all been multi-trunked.

Do you have a view on what species this is?

Yes, it is just Dypsis baronii !!

That was confirmed by Kew office in Tana.

It's a very colorfull variety of D baronii specific of this place.

All others populations of D baronii, even if there are not so far from this place, are with the classical colours.

That is a very colorful palm Olivier. Always exciting to see your photos from Madagascar!

Palms being marketed as "Black Stem" that I have seen have a white powdery crownshaft, rather different from this variety in your photos. I will dig up some pics.
