Plant The Palm Then Have Some Wine

post-1122-0-24375900-1415646880_thumb.jpI was once out strolling one very hot sumer's day

When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest

In a big field of tall grass

I laid there in the sun and felt it caressing my face

As I fell asleep I dreamed of owning a Areca catechu dwarf

This really blew my mind

The fact that me a simple minded guy would own an Areca catech dwarf

But there I was

I was taken to Jeff Searle's place

The hall of the palm kings

I stood high upon a mountain top

Shouting to the world

In front of

Every kind of palm

There were tall ones, short ones, red ones, round ones and big ones

Out of the middle came Jeff Searle

He whispered in my ear

Something crazy

He said

Plant the palm then have some wine

Plant the palm then have some wine

...so I did

Well if that just didn't make me thirsty......one more. :) I was at Peter's the other day and he did pick out a great spot there in the corner of the yard. Nice and sunny and the heat trapped in the corner. And probably within 3-5 years it should start to flower and set seed. Thanks!

Love it, and definitely my style of planting in fall and spring. In summer, I prefer beer.

I really enjoy my collection of palms but I wouldn't go so far as to say I have a full-on garden. I purchased 4 palms from Jeff Searle and planned to plant them the same day. So with great intentions I went to the side of the house to get the first one on the line-up card and reaized quickly that I couldn't carry it. I also had no help from those who sorta offered. So I went and got my handy dandy wheel barrow and slid the palm in it, then tip toed around the edge of the pool hoping not end up in it. I made it to the proposed sight with my only helper.

Then I slid the palm out and started to dig the hole measuring the dept very scientifically by marking the shovel handle.

After the whole was dug and the pot cut up, I couldn't get the palm out of the pot...so I walked out into the street hoping to find someone I could pay $10 to help me...finding no one I was stumped. Finally it came to me and I lay the palm down and pulled the pot off like taking off boots...the plopped in the hole without disturbing the root ball.

Love those Areca catechu dwarf -- choice palm, in my opinion, and that one looks amazing. Are you planting all four palms in a clutch, or in various select plots? What are the other choices?

If you don't want to cut the pot, lay the palm on its side and give it several good whacks all the way around, and the rootball will slide out easy as you please. Let's see, red wine with an animal on the label?

Hi Kim- The other palms are going to be planted in different parts of the property. I scored in addition to the dwarf a Satakentia Liukiensis, a Verschaffeltia splendida and Joey altifrons. I plan to put them in the ground this weekend.-Peter

PS-I'm thinking a Pinot Noir from Oregon.
