looking for area with red soil

Hey y'all. A producer friend of mine is looking for an area in southern California with a dry, or desert, look with red soil for some commercial shoot. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Vazquez Rocks is a classic movie location, and I think Red Rock Canyon (near Vegas), another well-worn film location, has vast hematite deposits. If they want to stay south of L.A., perhaps call Anza-Borrego and just ask them where there are some large hematite deposits and whether they entertain permits for shooting. Otherwise it pretty much changes to red when you cross the border into Arizona. I remember Kingman being beautifully red. Also you can look up on imdb filming locations for 1950s/'60s sci-fi "Mars" pictures (also of course many westerns) shot with that red look in mind. Best bet probably is just to hire a reputable and experienced location manager. They can be worth their weight in gold in this type of situation. If this is a union shoot (though I'm guessing because of your question that it isn't), and you're looking for one, I believe they fall under the jurisdiction of transpo at present, Teamsters, local 399.

Well, if nothing in So-Cal suffices, maybe Zion National Monument in Utah?

At least the rocks are red, a Jane Fonda rib roast, waiting to be basted to (un-vegan) perfection . . .
