Wow that's a beauty!!!! How old? How big was it when you planted it?

And how does one upload pictures so they aren't sideways?

Jeff, nice job growing the decipiens! What is the story behind the palm -- how long ago was it planted, etc.? Not many of those in your neighborhood, right?

Jeff, what a beauty. I wish its base and lower trunk were visible. Have you ever thought of removing the Japanese boxwood hedge and highlighting that gorgeous palm with a much lower ground cover and maybe a boulder or two?

Matty , thanks for straightening out the pic.

Jim, yes I have. I may remove them next spring as I was thinking about updating my landscape to show off the dd.

And yea, that includes a floodlight.. Lol

As far as this palms history goes, I got it as a 4 in plant about 15-16 years ago.

It started trunking about 3 or so years ago.

A lot of people are concerned about how close it's planted to my house...

I originally planted it 48 inches from my house it has traveled towards the house so that now the center of the Palm is 29 inches from the wall.

As far as I can tell it's getting fatter, but no longer moving, so as long as the trunk stays under 60 inches diameter, I'll be ok.

As far as temps it has seen, the coldest was about 23f/24f.

That's happened at least twice since I planted it.

The hottest was an air temp of 113f but I'm sure that the area where this Palm is... Facing west , it hits 120f every summer.

Fast draining rich soil seems to be the key for this guy.

I mulch it with 3 in of fir bark every spring, water it once a week with a mirco spray emitter.

Sometimes twice a week.

I fertilize it with whatever I happen to have at the time. I last fertilized it two mon ago with about 2 cups of 10-10-10.

Oh yea, it does still have it's twin attached.

Once it gets noticeable I just cut it off at ground level .

That's beautiful, Jeff. Did you have to baby it when it was younger, wrapping it or protecting it in the winter in any way?

This is already a legendary palm on palmtalk!

I hope someday my triple, double and singular decipiens could reach that syze, stage and magnificense :)

Part of the reason that the trunk isn't so fat, could be that I over the past 2 years I've cut the fronds a bit prematurely .

They are quite heavy and resting on my rain gutter.

They have cleared the roof now so I doubt that I'll need to do that next year.

My theory is more leaf surface equals thicker trunk?

So cool! :greenthumb:

I tried one and it didn't make it over summer. I've heard they dont like high heat + humidity.

Im surprised that you say it takes 120f every summer. This was one of my favorite palms when I got started with my palm obsession. Especially the colorful ones. I remember seeing a blue one at JDAnderson palm nursery in Fallbrooks. Makes me want to try one again...

Daniel,

Our Actual official air temps rarely go above 108f, but against that wall, in the shade of the palm, I have readings that regularly go above 120f on hot sunny days . I think the highest was 125f.

Dave,

I took a new pic with my iPhone a couple days ago, .... No big changes, Looks about the same as the photo above only about  8-10 in more trunk.

I'll post another photo when I get a chance.

Jeff
