I recently removed a sprawling ficus and would like to plant a larger palm - say with 5-10 ft of clear trunk in its place. This is next to the drive way and on the property line, so frond clearance is initially important ( to clear the car) . Full sun location.

I already have a washingtonia along the drive closer to the house, but i'm thinking of getting something else. My default is another washingtonia, but i'm thinking perhaps latan/ royal etc. I have priced a washingtonia - 6-8ft trunk- 350.00 delivered and planted......

As my info says, I am in Melbourne Beach, Florida........ two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean and 6 homes from the Indian River Lagoon......

Any suggestion? Help a brother out.

Howboutcha?

Gosh, I'd assume you have so many possibilities there...why of all things a Washie? I guess I have the California bias against Washingtonia...I ripped them all out of my yard. I'd be very jealous of a big fat Royal.

Careful putting royals where the heavy falling fronds can fall on and damage vehicles. I second the kentiopsis

Thanks folks- Great ideas............... possibly a little risky on the frosty factor..............One issue is the local nurseries don't usually have decent size specimens ............... ....Still looking!

Kentiopsis can take a good frost. Or so I have been told. Or so I hope. And so we'll find out...

  • 3 weeks later...

Ken Delivers all over Florida and has awesome stuff at very reasonable prices. Satakentia would be spectacular and you don't see them too often. I love the purple crown shafts!
