Exploding Parajubaea torallyi torallyi

Harry

Recommended Posts

I have always thought that the description of this palm on various internet sites was an exaggeration.

However, having grown one from seed I can attest to those statements.

This is turning out to be a huge palm.

A fast growing alternative to a jubaea one might say!!

Here is a series of one of mine over the past 4 years.

Harry, brace yourself. Your tor tor is still practically embryonic. (Give it a lollypop? :))

I wasn't aware of the eventual size when I planted mine. Click on the link and scroll down to No. 27. That's my house, and while it isn't obvious from the picture, the palm's about a meter (3 feet) across the base, at least, perhaps approaching 4 feet. It's going on 25 feet tall. (Give it a couple of liters of gin. :mrlooney: )

http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/43487-palms-asking-to-be-photographed/

It's the fattest palm in my yard now, though I suspect that a Jube will eventually get larger. No trunk yet. It hasn't damaged the sidewalk, the most dramatic evidence yet for naysayers who say palms lift concrete.

Look a lot like mules at that age...till you look at the trunk.

Dave, tor tors blow most mules in the weeds when it comes to size. Easily double, possibly triple. Just massive, monstrous.

The one exception might be a hybrid between a tor tor and a jube. Or, maybe a queen and a jube.

Harry, here's a better picture.

It's big, and I don't think I'm exaggerating about the size.

The Shoe is 32 cm (12.5") long.

Happy Halloween Palm People!

I thought I would share this photo with you all.

Are those baronii in the foreground? I've got a few that we'll see how they contend with our winter.

Hi,

Those are baronii in the background. Recovering after last year's freeze. The Parajubaea's had only minimal damage. At least as hardy as a Syagrus romanzoffiana, perhaps a bit more so.

Hello All,

I'm back. Here is a picture of my Parajubaea torrallyi. It is about 11 years old for a five gallon can with bunny ears! The base of the trunk is 38 inches in diameter.

Yeah,

And it can. I just put in a new deck around mine because the trunk had swelled to pushing right up against the old one. We did a nice carve out for the new deck.

Ah, what the Monster wants, the Monster gets!

Hmm. The Monster also has a monster of a tasty palm heart. A specimen a third the size of ours fed 40 people with leftovers.

(Maybe tell the Monster?)

Yours won't bump into the house, but it will be close, like a big silver bodyguard . . . .

I'd sure try one where you are, if you have the room.

They're about as cold-tolerant as a queen palm.

Thanks Dave :) I am growing Parajubea cocoides in Pyrgos, still young but nice with the wide strap leafs. Cocoides is my favorite of the genus and the least cold tolerant, thankfully it doesn't need cold tolerance in Pyrgos!

And also a couple P. torallyi var. microcarpa in cold Melissia. In a future house in Athens, with more room, I will probably go with a P. torallyi var. torallyi, unless I go with cocoides again :)

Harry, David, and David, your toralyi are all awesome. I love the Parajubaea genus. This one beside my driveway was a tiny strap leafed plant seven years ago. The last two years it has, along with my other Parajubaea, really taken off.

This torallyi used to be much smaller than the Bismarkia to the right.
