Hyophorbe lagenicaulis Confirmation?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, this is my first post and will have a few more as trying to identify some palms for a new friend who was given seeds over the years from an airline pilot who would bring them back from his travels around the world. The problem is my friend does not quite know what she has so trying to help out.........

I believe these photos are of the Hyophorbe Lagenicaulis "Bottle Palm" is that correct?

Welcome JJD!

Hyophorbe can be extremely variable. We get crosses between bottles and spindles turning up here in the 'Nam all the time.

I noticed on your second picture that the leaf bases on your palm are packed very close together and the fronds seem to be quite straight. These are familiar traits of H. verschaffeltii, yet the colouration seems to be more bottle like. I could be wrong, but I'd hedge a bet that you could have a spindle/bottle cross.

Here are some pics of my palms for contrast:

Hello Philippe & Nick, thank you for the welcome and thank you for the wonderful pics from Sri Lanaka and 'Nam.

Its now got me thinking what to do with the below seedling from the H. lagunicaulis in my above post. Either separate or plant as is, in a cluster of four? I have attached a pic of a triple in a big pot.
