Pre-Halloween Deluge Makes The Garden HAPPY

Last night's drenching was a real blessing and, hopefully, it's what we're going to see lots of this rainy season. The sun is peaking out now and it's in the 70s...sooo nice.

I came at the wrong time of year, I think. Love the decorations.

Matty, The storm whipped through pretty fast but we managed a third of an inch regardless. The grassy area hillsides are starting to green up now which is nice and these warm temperatures after a rainfall are such a bonus too. We're expecting the next storm to hit next week.

Keith, what you see in the daylight pictures is one thing. The Halloween night "production" here is another. Singing animated jack-o-lanterns, animated sickly lady swinging on porch swing, lots of ugly demented dolls, and lots of lighting effects. We have a lot of fun here and get 100 to 150 trick-or-treater kids and probably close to that many adult chaperones Halloween night. BOO!

Looking awesome Jim! The rain here was most welcome. But the winds and the resulting pine needle deluge were less so.

I need to get some advice from you at some point on companion plants. What are those red ground covers around the Chamby/Syagrus?

Thanks, Ben. The red leafed plants, a favorite of mine are Iresine herbsii (bloodleaf). They will grow in full shade as well as in part day full sun, are heat tolerant but aren't drought tolerant except in cool summer coastal areas. They'll even grow in water as long as it isn't stagnant.

They are gorgeous. I see they are pretty tender. Not sure they will make it here.

Try a few in protected spots, Ben. Mine sailed through the 2007 freeze with superficial damage that they grew out of in short order. I have a completely exposed one that gets frosted most winters and it's now the biggest one in my yard.

Will do Jim - trying to track some down - thanks for the advice.

It's actually Iresine lindenii, not herbsii. I goofed. Herbsii is a bit more tender. Lindenii is tougher.

Jim your Halloween layout is frighteningly brilliant ! Of course the garden looks as good as ever ~!

I grow the Iresine (bloodleaf) down here in my garden and has never been affected by cold temps .

A short video of the Halloween toys in action would be greatly appreciated :yay:

Thanks all for the compliments. They're promising a lot of rain Halloween and Halloween night. Great for the palms...not so great for the trick-or-treaters.
