Morning coffee in the garden

LilikoiLee

Recommended Posts

I start everyday with coffee in the garden…..sometimes by walking through it, which lets me see how everything is doing and think about future plantings. But most often I start my morning coffee ritual by sitting on this bench. I like this bench in particular because it has a view of our earliest plantings and the biggest display of what not to do in the future. As you can see one of those mistakes was to plant everything too close together. Here are some of the views from it.

In the foreground are three palms whose names I have forgotten. I hope someone will be able to identify them. Two chambeyronia can be seen in the background. Unfortunately they have tilted in the sun. We now plant palms that are facing the sun with a slight backward tilt. At the lower left (down a small cliff) is a Syagrus schizophylla.

Areca catechu alba to the back left. (Another one tilting to the sun.)

Euterpe precatoria

Two orange crown shaft Areca vestiaria.

Cleo, the cat, who enjoys the garden as much as we do. The orange pot is where were keep our ‘spider sticks’. We have spider pots all over the garden and grab a stick whenever we enter an area where we are likely to run into a spider web.

A grouping of five Lytocaryum weddellianum. We recently acquired two L. hoehnei which aren’t visible because we planted them on the back sick of the weddellianum. The clumping palm at the upper left is a Euterpe oleracea.

Cycas with the S. schizophylla and a couple of Pinangas in the background.

The three palms I don’t remember the name of on the left, Veitchia joannis and a Chambeyronia and across the driveway.

Too close together? I still see some bare spaces between them. Beautiful Lee!

No coffee in the garden for me in the morning.... It stresses me out! Mosquitoes are awful, Red Imported Fire ants everywhere, and the dang Armadilloes dig every night. So, its better to start the day inside, let the stress of work get me all riled up so the gardening part seems more like recreation.

Now, if I had a garden like yours....I can see how things would be much different.

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

Are you able to sit for long and enjoy your coffee? When I do that, it's only a short time before I get up and start tidying up this and that -- or taking photos, as you have done. :) Everything looks lush and beautiful, and the density seems just right. I like your garden art too. What can you tell us about the red ball in one of the photos?

OMG! is that real?

But just a question before I decide If I come for coffee or not: do you serve ristretto?

More seriously (and kindly) I think if I come for coffee I'll stay for weeks and discover every day your garden and collection, from morning to evening ( what do you serve in the evening?)

Bravo, Lee and Mike, Bravo. (again I get jealous :crying: )

Unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to have coffee or tea in this garden anytime of the day. Maybe I'll get the chance before I'm at the 'walker' stage. It's so hard not to make that sound like a whine.

Lee,

Well, what an amazing concept - morning coffee bench! :) I have to give that some thought... Great pictures of a great garden, and everything looks so green and perfect! :)

Looks great Lee & Mike! Yes, planting palms too close together is a common problem probably most of us have, however, that should not be too much of a problem as you have a professional hole digger on hand who can thin out and re-plant the more crowded plants for you! Just get him a new o`o bar if the other one is too worn down.

That morning coffee bench is a great idea. Now how about an evening wine tasting bench to end the day right?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Sounds like it might be a good subject for a new thread, 'Views from your private palm refuge.'

C'mon Bo, relax a little bit and put down that Red Bull.

Red Bull, hmmm...you must have me confused with someone else! :bemused: Now if you've said Gatorade 'Rain' I would have paid attention! :laugh2: Actually, you made me pay attention anyway - new thread in the making! See how easy that was! :mrlooney:
