25 years after Loma Prieta earthquake

Today is the 25th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake in northern California.

I wasn't there; I was living in San Bernardino at the time, October 17, 1989. I remember going to stores with those recently-invented giant screen TVs (at least recent to me) and seeing all kinds of pictures of horrors and heroism.

I remember that pancaked freeway. There were cars under there, with people in them. Some were trapped for days.

63 people were killed, and more than 3,500 were injured.

This was not the big one; that was back in 1906, and will be? (The longer the better.)

Bridges collapsed, houses sank into seismic quicksand in the Marina District, and fires broke out everywhere.

Were you there? Share with us, if you can.

Here's a closeup of the Nimitz Freeway, which shows total failure of support structures. Yike.

This is relevant to me, because I regularly drive in the morning past buildings much like these, with cornices, brickwork, etc., that won't stand much shaking.

6 people died at the scene below, Sixth Street between Bluxome and Townsend in San Francisco.

I remember this day differently...game three of the baseball World Series was cancelled (as it should have been) because chunks of cement were falling from the upper deck of Candlestick Park. Oakland later swept the Giants...just like Kansas City is going to do this year!!

Oh, I remember it well.

We felt it here in Modesto, by far the strongest quake that I ever felt.

And we are 60 miles from the epicenter.

As a matter of fact, we haven't had any earthquakes since that I am aware of.

Amazing how many people survived the pancaked freeways in the bayarea.

Can you imagine the damage had it occurred mid winter when the ground was saturated?

Btw...the epicenter was in Santa Cruz county, which is central ca., though still quite north of southern ca.

I was in Washington DC on business and sitting down to watch the World Series with some associates.....living only 40 miles from SF, when I saw the Cypress structure I immediately thought that 50,000 people were killed rather than the 50 + that died there that day. The quake occurred right in the middle of rush hour but it appears that everyone left early to watch the series. I spent all night trying to call home and finally got hold of my daughter at 5 am (2am local) to find out that everyone was OK......except me, of course.
