Gopher eradication begins @ Nacholandia 2.0....Warning gopher death photo

This wily guy has been giving my front lawn grief since we moved in and I haven't been home to get him. I tried gopher bait (please don't judge me) which I think just irritated him so he tore up the lawn more. I got back from AZ last night filled in all his holes from this weeks destruction and took a look this AM to see where he was digging. I didn't see any activity when I first walked the yard this AM but when I was pouring my second cup he poked his head up...mocking me...mistake :excl: Good thing I had "Ol ' blue" my carbine action 200 shot range model air rifle with working compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.

It's a good morning.

Sometimes that's the best way to get them.

I note that the poison isn't as available as it used to be.

Not much meat on a gopher. I heard there is 7 different kinds of meat on a turtle, but gopher?! Not much more than a hot wing. Hmmm? A dozen Buffalo Gopher's with ranch please. We could call it Goobers, nothing to do with Hooters TM.

Got a recipe?

If it's good the slaughter will begin. Nothing foments extinction like a good recipe.

It is so funny that you brought this post up today, my neighbors that are cultivating the Queen Gopher Hive, QGHTM , are getting a pool and they just started digging yesterday.  Well sure enough the gophers are making a run for my yard, the epic battle continues.   I was really suprised when I was digging to set a trap I felt something soft and moving in the hole!  This little SOB was trying to bite me, so he got the Shovel of Doom SODTM.  Sorry for the gorey pic, but the thread already had a warning. :D

ok...that's graphic!

It takes so long to get many palms to become robust in California. After years of nurturing, one of these guys show up and the palm quickly meets its end.

The gophers always seem to attack the rarest or slowest growing palms. Solution: the Shovel of Doom SODTM

We have a family of red tail hawks, mom, dad and two chicks. They would call that gopher “lunch”.

The other night our cat was sitting on the driveway relaxing. Her head suddenly turned. She ran across the lawn, leaped over a bed of ivy, slipped thru a fence and ran up the sidewalk out of view. Seconds later she's back with a dead gopher in her mouth. Amazing!

The red tail hawk posse of Doom :D My red tailed hawk usually dined on our resident morning doves.

Nothing seems like it is willing to eat the Peacocks that showed up in the neighborhood. So pretty to look at, but loud and obnoxious.

Our Bombay super cat got another.

This time she was curled on a deck chair and suddenly lifted her head. She jumped on the railing and looked down at the ground, as I did with her.

Sure enough, there was a large gopher in the ivy. Next morning I showed her a new gopher hole and said, "Get that gopher!"

She gave me "the look."

This morning she delivered it with ivy stuck in its throat. This is the equivalent of you or me chowing down a 6' Alocasia Calidora.

This cat is truly amazing.

Anyone have experience with these?

Screenshot_20201120-232635_Chrome.thumb.jpg.81675310daeefcefa205ce9396dd5389.jpg

There stainless steel, which won't degrade in the ground fast which poses some issues. I bought 2 of the 5 gallon ones but haven't opened them. Was wondering if the roots will eventually bust through allowing the palms/cycads to develop a healthy root system?

Other opinion i was thinking is planting in the ground with the pot (pot-planting) giving the plant plenty of time to establish so the gophers do eat the root ball?

Appreciate any experience or advice on the topic thanks!

Hesperia,Southern CA (High Desert area). Zone 8b

Elevation; about 3600 ft.

Lowest temp. I can expect each year 19/20*f lowest since I've been growing palms *13(2007) Hottest temp. Each year *106

I've seen people use chicken wire to cage in the root ball like that. Probably a little cheaper to go that route and you can make it bigger or smaller depending on the type of palm or plant you want to protect. It will definitely protect but the best thing is to keep setting traps till they're all gone.

@Chris Chance, I think I might do that. Thanks :greenthumb:

Any meat battered, fried and served with cold beer will sell very well.
