Lethal Yellowing in Hawaii?

WestCoastGal

Recommended Posts

We were watching "Hawaii Five-O" tonight and early in the show Danny was outside some hotel area and the Phoenix canariensis shown in the background had very yellow lower fronds in the canopy. Was this likely lethal yellowing? I'm so use to seeing beautiful lush palm trees on TV shows and movies this was really jarring.

Zone 9b (formerly listed as Zone 9a); Sunset 14

I played back the scene with Dano at the Kahala Hotel and Resort, starting at about 11:15 or so. The Phoenix palms look like a sylvestris or a mixup with CIDP, sylvestris and dactylifera. But what do I know about Phoenix? If you get a street view on google earth you can see an over pruned view of them with all the deficient fronds removed.

It appears that the palms have a typical Magnesium deficiency, not LY. The back lighting of the sun makes the yellowing more enhanced. Mg deficiency becomes apparent in the older leaves while LY usually presents as a loss of vigor and often a "flag leaf" higher in the crown yellowing completely.

So many species,

so little time.
