Hey everyone, I am sure a lot of you are familiar with these three infamous palm trees; they are from a good friend of mine's place--Mr. Steve Stern. As far as I know, his three and one at Fairchild are the only ones in cultivation! Well, I have some good news to report: for the first time since I have known about palms(and probably a lot longer than that), these three have begun to set ripe seed! What's even better news than that, is he and I have gotten them to sprout! Yes, that's right, I am happy to report that sooner rather than later, these amazing little palms will be available to procure. I know there are a lot of you that have been wanting this palm for a very long time, well, stay tuned...

I have always loved the one at Fairchild. If I remember correctly it was in front of the old bookstore/gift shop near the old entrance.I am amazed it has taken this long to produce seed.That palm has been there forever. PM me if seeds ever become available.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Yes. My post is on the curly leaf variety--the other form is ehh...

Back is 2007 I pestered Steve to find me one of these to bring to Cali. Love this palm. I know he has been trying to get seed for a long time. Why did it work now? Maybe hybrid?

I know WayCool has been trying to find this Palm for a while :)

Len, I can't tell you. All I know is this is the first time I gave it a try. Maybe the palms are just ready? I doubt we are talking hybrid--Steve doesn't even have any Thrinax besides these and no way all of the seedlings would be hybrids--bigger question is are all of them true to seed? I would bet they are.

To my knowledge all of Steve's flowered at the same time this year, which probably resulted in the production of fertile seed.

Buuut who knows :laugh2:

Those pots beneath the palm look like swines wating around for the fruits to fall! No kidding, this is how it lhad ooked to my eyes before I enlarged pic or took off my glasses.
