Cruising around the garden just before dusk and here is this Pelagodoxa just glowing like mad, showing off the white underside of a new leaf.

Just a stunner.

Woah! That's bigger than I thought! That's going to be a monster! You have some of the nicest specimens around Tim! I'd love to see your garden someday! I'm more of a third world traveler though

Hey, Tim, do you know which form that one is? I have the Marqueses form(bigger and slower, reputedly than the fiji form).

Boy Andrew, I have no idea. Sounds like the type description in' The E of CP' to me.

Tim,

Great looking Pelagodoxa! It's obviously performing extremely well. Looking forward to seeing it in person! :) Oh, and Palmdude, you can safely travel to Hawaii. In many respects parts of Hawaii are just like "third world"! :mrlooney:

Hi Tim, what a great looking palm you have there, I can't wait til mine get that big! And what a nerd you are to describe the bible of many collectors as the ECP, and what a nerd I am to immediately know what you're talking about!

A chuckle for Bo-Goran for calling Hawaii the third world. That's not the third world...I live in a third world land!

Here's a shot of my little guys from Marquesas Islands, well, at least, from Floribunda!

Peter, those are SHAWEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!! I don't know about you, but I was expecting mine to be super slow--I actually notice growth on it, though! They must be even faster in your climate...

Andrew, they are sweet! And they are definitely NOT the slowest palms on the property. I killed one a few years back so I am giving these lots of TLC. They've been in the ground over a year in heavy shade and are doing really well.

Sun is no problem for mine and it is not the size of yours--maybe two years off. Water is the key to these.

Hey Rob, Cindy, John, and Bo, a big mahalo to you.

Peter, thanks for the 'nerd' compliment, you don't know how long I've waited to be in that select category. Are you the president of that society? Your Pelegodoxa are looking great though.

Andrew, yours is looking good too.

Tim,

A beautiful specimen indeed! To me, this has always been one of the "Holy Grail" palms to collect. Their much more easy to buy one these days, but I remember at a Fairchild Garden Sale many years ago, a vendor was asking $400 for a sprouted seedling. Back in the early 90's. So it's nice to see a few here and there in private gardens now.

And as far as I know, there's not two forms, there's only ONE Pelagodoxa, there's just two differences in seed size.

Seed size, yes. But can you back it up with some stats in regards to differences in cold hardiness, leaf sizes and rates of growth? And I'm not interested in hearing about some Pele growing in Joe Smo's yard that took some extreme cold weather one winter, or someone's palm has larger leaves compared to another, etc.

Because in all the years I've grown them, and both seed sizes from the Marquesas Islands and the Fiji Islands, I never have seen OR heard of a real definitive difference. So please educate me.

I am not going to get into any kind of contest... I just know because a very reputable grower/seller relayed this information to me, personally--just as you have accolades he does too and I trust them.

Jeff, I would never throw anything at you or really anyone--you know that! :) I do enjoy our banter on Palmtalk.

I am sure you are familiar with the now defunct name of Livistona robinsoniana? Well, I find that palm to be different from(now Saribus) Livistona rotundifolia. Just in this scenario, I believe the two geographical populations of Pelagodoxa are different--not to taxonimists, but to us!

Honestly, I did hear the smaller seed form(fiji form) is the more cold hardy form--I am and have only grown the little one above, so I must bow to he who sold it...

Jeff, how do you feel about 'spicata' coconuts? I don't know why I can't get anyone to tell me why Coccos in a monotypic genus--Toby responded intelligently, once before, but I implore further discussion. In summation, I say two forms!!!!! HERE HERE!
