Cecropia had to be cutdown :(

A job I sadly had to do today was the cutting down of a large Cecropia peltata I planted on our property as this is "Now" here in Far Nth NSW declared a noxious weed and yesterday after our 5th visit from "weed inspectors" it was time to say good bye.

Our tree was a male so had no chance of spreading millions of seed and no other noted trees by the authorities where for some miles away "but" it had to go as they are becoming very invasive closer to the coast and "very invasive" in Hawaii.

Cecropia peltata or Snakewood tree is its common name is a very fast growing pioneer tree from Costa rica so before I cut it down I looked up to make sure no Sloths where up there feeding :)

What a shame, love this species :( I will try it here once i have more evergreen canopy.

Thankfully there aren't weediness lists here and weed inspectors and some exotics beautify our landscapes on their own, even forming forests. And they are very very welcome! :)

Kostas they look their best when only a few mtrs tall as the leaves are a good mtr wide then and a real "eye catcher" :) Pete

Wow,that big? I have only seen them as adults and really like the look of their canopy and leafs agains the sun :) As well as the big leafs that fall down,i think they were around 40cm diameter the leafs i saw in Florida.

Pete,

Wow, different strokes for different foilks! Here, as you already know, the only good Cecropia is a dead Cecropia! :mrlooney: This particular individual had the audacity to fall down and block my driveway during the storm last month. That was actually good news since I didn't have to go through the trouble of actually cutting it down myself (and that was indeed on the general agenda). All I had to do was to chop it up in smaller pieces with my chainsaw. Needless to say, that gave me a lot of satisfaction! :laugh2:
