Yeah, definitely not the most flattering photos of my garden. The illawarra is not getting any water, I am still waiting for that kentia to adapt to the sun, and the citrus garden is totally drought stressed. Someday when the drought is over the garden will look good again, but this is the best I can do on the water rationing we're under. I am focusing all the water on the new plantings and the old stuff has to fend for itself.

Actually, my pictures do not come even close to doing the place justice. Almost everything was healthy. There were a few occasions of summer burn and drought, but all in all, a very impressive garden to the number of palms and especially palm diversity in a climate that is obviously having a temper tantrum. A can't imagine the amount of work that went into transforming that hillside. Glad it is him and not me. His plans to further transform it were really forward thinking, too. Will be exciting to watch it continue to transform over the next few years.

And Axel was a very congenial host as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Dave, I only had my phone camera, so didn't take a whole lot of pictures. My Nikon is too bulky and heavy to carry on business trips, so my low quality camera phone combined with high sun time angles is not the way to photograph a garden to show its true beauty. But I do have a few more pictures from the second garden coming.

Before we get to the next garden, when I am driving away from my client's facility I see this beauty in the parking lot next door. Look at that canopy. Again, this is at a bad time of day with a not so good camera. It was jaw dropping for sure.

Water restrictions are tough Axel. Your strategy is similar to what alot of people did here a couple of years back. Chin up big guy, and imagine how sweet it will be with some drought breaking rains (it will happen eventually).

Ah, I know that place. It's in Santa Cruz right? That poor Rhopy got the torch last December but the Archontophoenix has grown out nicely.

Yes, this is Richard Josephson's garden in Santa Cruz. No so much water as he has a great catchment system, but he got zapped with 25 degrees last winter, many things still recovering.

And thank you to Axel who set up the visit and chaperoned my over there. Richard and his wife were also superb host. They were also into many other plants, and lots of color.

Ben and Jim, and Axel and Richard. The pleasure was all mine. Meeting people and seeing gardens are what PRAs are all about. I have always been a little bit of an introvert, and certainly no one ever described my as an extrovert for sure. Even after several PRAs my wife is always surprised when I do another one. I have never been the type of person to travel across the country, show up to a home of someone I really don't know, and spend a few hours with them in their garden. But when I leave, I then feel that I truly have a new friend. The relationship is exponentially expanded. I would encourage anyone who has not done this to go out of their way to do a PRA. It truly expands the gardening lifestyle to a whole new level. Most of the individual plants in the gardens will fade in your memories, but the people you meet will not. Every combination gardener/garden has a personality that is a combination of the two. This you will always remember and it will always bring a smile to your face when you do.

More pictures to come.

Back to Richard's garden. Richard described this clump of Everglades Palms as steadily declining even before last year's hard winter. It certainly was not water, and there were no obvious signs of disease. And although he didn't have an aggressive feeding program, It just didn't feel like it was food related when looking at them. But I do keep thinking that every time I have seen this palm thriving it has been on or in Limestone. Axel, if you want to pass the word, I would apply some Lime and see what happens. And a little Palm fert certainly won't hurt either.

When you travel for a living, each trip seems to have its own little unique challenge, but this is a first one for me. How to fit that palm into the max allowable carry on luggage behind it. And then how to fit the items that were in the carry-on into my briefcase. Can't wait to see the look in the security scanner monitor's face. Lord, I hope I have TSA Precheck on this flight. This should be fun.

One of the things I love about Richard's garden was his use of color and shapes. These fellows were awesome. The largest one probably a foot across, maybe more.

post-1207-0-49805000-1410498174_thumb.jp

At times the garden felt cottagey, then African, then Mediterranean, then tropical. It was a true, as tech guys would call it, mash up. And don't construe that to be a bad thing. It was refreshing and wonderful.

post-1207-0-98599200-1410498289_thumb.jp

The host again, and Axel, with Lucas in the backsack. Kids are so cute, he was dying to come with us, and by the time were there a few minutes later, he was out like a light. This area of the garden was being re-done.

Made it home, pretty well exhausted, but home sweet home. Let me continue on Richard's garden before I say night night to all.

This big fellow was defoliated in last year's 25 degree low, but was coming back just fine. One full spear was open and another on the way.

And I loved the way he used interesting plants to add color throughout.

And I would have loved to have caught this group in full bloom, but even without the foliage shape and variegation made them stand out sans blooms.

Did you get to keep your palm?

I did get to keep it. And if you want to be the hit of the party at a busy airport, just walk through it with a palm sticking out of your carry-on bag. Everyone wanted to know about it.

It is sitting in the kitchen sink soaking in water tonight. Tomorrow it goes in the ground. And we have a whole week ahead of rain forecast. After leaving drought stricken NorCal it will probably think it has died and gone to palm heaven.
