Planning a Hawaii Vacation

HI all,

I am planning a birthday trip to Hawaii in September 2014. I arrive on Oahu early afternoon on the 10th and leave on the evening of the 18th. I will spend a few days on Oahu but plan to take a flight to the Big Island around the 13th to the 17th or 18th.

I have on my plans visiting the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, Panaewa Zoo, Volcano National Park. Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated. I love palms, tropical fruits and would love to experience of much of the island as I can during this short trip.

I really liked Lyon Arboretum on Oahu, could have spent several more hours there: http://manoa.hawaii.edu/lyonarboretum/

Foster Botanic Garden is right in Honolulu, and worth a visit: http://www.honolulu.gov/cms-dpr-menu/site-dpr-sitearticles/568-foster-botanical-garden.html

There is a World Bromeliad Conference on Oahu while you are there. http://www.bsi.org/new/

If you have a car, you can visit Ho'omaluhia Botanic Garden: http://www.aloha-hawaii.com/oahu/hoomaluhia-botanical-garden/

You have selected some fine places to visit on the Big Island. Be sure to stop at a few farmers markets to enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables, and many other non-food items.

Adding to Kim's excellent suggestions, a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is generally best early in the day. Sometimes the clouds tend to roll in by early afternoon, making for not quite optimal weather. If you like shorter hikes, the Kilauea Iki hike is great - about 4 miles through very interesting terrain and down into the Kilauea Iki caldera. Two hours at a very easy pace.

And one of the more unique Farmers' Markets is Maku'u Farmers' Market, right off Highway 130 (going towards Pahoa and Leilani Estates), right around the 8 mile marker. Sort of a combined Farmers' Market and weekly social event for all of lower Puna.

Where will you be staying on the Big Island? Kona side of Hilo side?

Oakley, California

55 Miles E-NE of San Francisco, CA

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

Hi,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am looking to stay on the Hilo side and maybe do a day venture to Kona (maybe overnight) depending on the driving and the million of things to see. Just finalizing some plans now.
