International Left-Handers Day

Imagine that! They (whoever "they" are) have proclaimed today August 13, 2014 as International Left-Handers Day. Apparently only 10% of people are left handed and a bunch of genes determine one's handeness...and apparently it runs in families. BUT one can be taught to use the left hand as the dominant hand...take for instance the tennis player Rafael Nadal, he is right handed but his uncle taught him to play tennis left handed because the uncle thought Nadal would then have an advantage... I guess the uncle was right. Or take the golfer Phil Mickelson...he is also right handed but he plays golf left handed. Or take the baseball player Mickey Mantle...he batted left handed and right handed.Huh? If being left handed gives one an advantage, why doesn't everyone try to be left handed?

Here is an article in USAToday

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2014/08/13/international-left-handers-day/13959811/

The weight of lies will bring you down / And follow you to every town / Cause nothin happens here

That doesn't happen there / So when you run make sure you run / To something and not away from

Cause lies don't need an aero plane / To chase you anywhere

Cool. I'm left-handed and so is my younger son. He was a heck of a basketball point guard who drove opposing righties nuts. Biggest problems for us are the countless machines and gadgets that are right-handed: scissors, knives, gearshifts, ladles, pencil sharpeners etc... We also sit at the outside corners of dinner tables so we don't knock elbows with righthanders. But at least we aren't harassed or punished in school anymore for using our left hands. When I was in elementary school, my teachers forced me to write my cursive lessons underhanded (60% of lefthanders, including me, write with a "hook"). Thirty minutes of h*** that lasted all day.

Lots of things are right handed...every camera's shutter button is on the right. I have a big brushcutter and all the throttle controls are on right...as a leftie I stand on the right side of it...trouble is the hot exhaust exits straight onto me! The only saving grace here is that cars are right hand drive, which means they're perfectly suited to left handed people!

Two of my three kids are pure left handers. The third is right handed but can only play golf, cricket, baseball etc left handed...however he is also a point guard and can dribble really well with either hand....really mixed up...LOL! :)

One of my elder brothers was the same as that Daryl, batted in cricket left handed, golf left handed etc.but was right handed in every other way.
