Here is my Home Depot Bismarkia I put in the ground LAST spring. I just opened its first fan!   When I came home to find it last week, I was looking at it during dusk and I could HEAR it opening up!  WAY COOL! The first time I could HEAR growth! :)

The "blades" are now getting a "pink" tint to them, not sure what color it will stop at.

(with my simple email reduction program, this works on most of my pics)

I had some offers to resize and post for me, I have sent the originals to Dean, he should post soon.

Hey BS,

I bought one right before the summer (10 gal for $91) and planted it at the beginning of summer.  The bizzie is very fast.  It has 4 new fronds since.  Thank goodness that I read all the comments on this forum before planting it (big hole in ground mixed with perlites, full sum all day, moderate watering).

Dean!  Thanks for the posting!!!

Wal!  Thats actually the street, and it gets better....I didn't know as much a year ago, so, its mostly in clay AND there are power lines above!   Not to mention the guy wires for support.  Not long after I planted I got the great idea to see about putting underground wires at somepoint. only my house, another and a streetlight are past the pole.  :(

But I like how it looks!  :P

Kris-

Its hard to notice in the pics, but there are bits of silver, red and purple all over the palm.   The new frond is even getting a pink tinge to it in spots, with the color changing almost daily!

From what I understand, the green ones are just green.  I do live near the coast, and that may be preventing some of the brightness...?

Bill

Wal- Nope, its staying right where it is, my record is very poor with transplants!!!  (Just pulled out a dead kentia transplanted 6-7 months ago)

From what I understand, the green ones are just green.

I saw a green one at the Leu Gardens which I fell in love with. I believe there was something to it that almost made up for the fact that it was just green. It was far more robust and HUGE than the silver forms at the same place.

I have a silver form on the ground and it's starting to go palmate, on its 10th leaf I believe. I germinated it last year. Its sister is still in a pot but the first couple of leaves are curly and I noticed yesterday the last leaves are turning a fatigue green color rather than purple/blue (is growing in afternoon shade too). Is it possible I have a green form? How to distinguish between the two as small seedlings?

Kris,

Thank you, and the cycad is actually an Encephalartos. I have been informed by Anders Lindstrom (cycad expert at Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Thailand) that it is an E. paucidentatus.

I have been informed by Anders Lindstrom (cycad expert at Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Thailand) that it is an E. paucidentatus.

One way to confirm is if it (a) has few spines (teeth, ergo "paucidentatus") along the edges of the leaflets and (B) there are mulitple little ridges running the length of the underside of the leaflets.

Wasn't your line to the honey when she was questioning the size of a green Bizzie something like.
