Visiting Florida in October ?

Recommended Posts

Thanks to very cheap flights from Newport News, VA to Palm Beach, FL and a few days scheduled off from work, I'm aiming to drive around and visit some more favorites. I'm leaning towards arriving the last Monday in September and perhaps staying through the next weekend. However, my plans could shift based on any palm/tropical tree/orchid events.

I see Fairchild Botanical Garden has a members only sale the first weekend in October. I see the Palm Society of Palm Beach has a meeting Oct.1. Any ideas about the Searle sale dates or any Palm Society meetings or Botanical Garden talks, or Orchid or tropical trees/fruits/ornamental talks or sales (basically anything plant related) would be greatly appreciated.

Once I buy the tickets, I doubt I can change the dates.

I will likely drive to Selby and Homestead, etc. so events could span the Southern part of the state on either coast. Right now I plan to save the Orlando area for my next trip unless there's a special reason to head that way.

I have looked at several websites, but see that not all dates are listed yet. Thanks so much for any suggestions. I don't need to plan out everyday so far in advance but need to buy the tickets and mark off the time on the work schedule ASAP.

I bet Jeff will have a special sale date for you.

If your staying in the palm beach area and feel like driving up to Jupiter you're more then welcome to come by, 2.5 acres of pretty much just palms. Jupiter means not as exotic as Fairchild but the price is right. also check in the freebie section, plenty of free palms some I don't have listed and should have some seeds of various palms on hand at the time.

Cindy- If you are headquartered in the Palm Beach area, I too can point you to some special places like the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden (with one of the largest collection of palms this side of Fairchild), Mounts Botanical and a remarkable 6 acre private garden in the center of Palm Beach.-Peter

That doesn't happen there / So when you run make sure you run / To something and not away from

Cause lies don't need an aero plane / To chase you anywhere

Mounts has added some nice rarer palms in the last couple of years, it's a nice easy garden to visit.

Us Broward folks not only got palms that will knock you out...but color like never seen. Mr Searle & I are most accommodating. My Metroxylon V's should be in final phase of seed production..always loved the one in your avatar.

Cindy, Palm Beach folks can grow some serious palms also. You're welcome here any time (I'll drive :) ) Mounts Botanical happens to be across the street from the Palm Beach Airport.

There's so much to see in SoFlo.

A week isn't even close to the time you should have

but

Try to get to Fairchild, and the Florida Keys. There's palms in habitat. If you can get to the west coast, near Naples, there's the state park with Royals in habitat.

Ken's a good cook and has a pool.

So much to see, so little time. . . .

And don't forget to try and see Jeff's place, and get sniffed by the Doggies of Doom.

Let's keep our forum fun and friendly.

Dave, I was lucky enough to get to some of these great sites at the Biennial but certainly wouldn't mind a second look!

And the Searle sale is while I'll be there too, likely When it opens the first Friday since I'm an early riser.

Thanks so much Floridians for your kind offers and as it gets closer I'll PM you to see if we can get together.

Tonight I saw that the Miami Orchid show will be on the same weekend so it will be plant paradise that week.

Cindy, October is a gorgeous month in Florida, and, no doubt you'll have a great time. I am going for a month on Tuesday...all work and no palms! Can you believe that? Florida and no palms...maybe just a few. From Selby to Homestead is a lot of area to cover, so realize that what you see will be spectacular and don't beat yourself up at the sites you won't see this trip. And you have the great fortune to be there when Jeff has one of his sales! Heaven.

Have fun!
