Is it just a coincidence or does that waiter look like Vladimir Putin, fixing up a polonium flambe?

To be entitled to order such fare, men will have to re-learn how to knot a tie...and women will have to put their stockings back on.

Lawry's is overrated.

EVERY place is overrated . . . .

I went there like 20 years ago. Lawry's is sort of like this cartoon Disneyland for food. Everyone on the staff looks like Archie and Veronica -- all the clients look like Miss Grundy and Mr. Weatherby.

Bet it hasn't changed.

BUT it's a great place to take Mom and Dad from the Midwest when they come to the Land of La La. Or, grandma and grandpa . . . My parents loved it.

Such places are disappearing from the landscape, but several still exist in San Diego -- get it while you can.

Try the mussel bisque en croute at Dobson's on Broadway Circle near Horton Plaza. Order it with the right tone of voice or the right attire and you will be offered a shot of sherry punched through the crust. The owner is a reformed matador with one good eye. I have not been there often enough to have my name engraved on a brass plaque on the bar, though I'm acquainted with a few who do.

Just across Broadway, the Westgate is a resplendent hotel with a gilded dining room awash in crystal chandeliers and opulent wall coverings. The service is glacial, but it's the only place I know of that continues to serve the original Monte Cristo sandwich, deep fried and dusted with powdered sugar. A heart-stopping delight.

For primal prime rib, Bully's is the place, partticularly the Del Mar location, open since 1967. Other throwback steakhouses would include the Red Fox Inn on El Cajon Blvd, and The Butcher Shop on Kearny Villa Rd. These places tend to have those dark red tuck-and-roll upholstered leather curved booths and your eyes have to adjust to the dark when you first walk inside.

For Godfather-type atmosphere, Olde Trieste on Morena Blvd. in its 51st year continues to serve up scampi, iceberg wedges smothered in blue cheese, and your choice of three different veal dishes. Elaborate and attentive service by waitstaff dressed way better than you.

I haven't been to Mr. A's since it changed to Bertrand's at Mr. A's, but I expect the red flocked rococo wallpaper and wall sconces have been replaced with more modern décor. The classic lobster bisque with lobster fritters and the escargot remain on the menu, along with 48-hour braised short ribs. Prime rib filet served with a slab of butter and oven roasted Atlantic Dover Sole are traditions that never die.

Tuck in!

I do miss the days when eating out was more special than it is today. And while there are still those formal restaurants today, and some are really special and unique, more often I find the food to not be extra special, just the price.

Kim-

I have printed out your post for future reference - I shall try one or two of your recommendations.

(by the way- the Red Fox room is a hang of mine and I have known the owner of the Butcher shop for years - he also runs 94 AERO squadron )

Fair warning -- I haven't been to most of these in y-e-a-r-s, except Dobson's and the Westgate, both for lunch only. (better prices) But after writing up the others, I'm ready to pay them a visit again. Could be fun, and I'd hate to see them close before I get there again.
