I haven't seen mine for a while, not since all these cold days have been around, will check it tomorrow, I have grave fears though.

My small newly acquired variegated one, which I might add has been a very speedy grower as far as the spear that it's pushing so anxious to see if frond when it opens will be variegated as well.post-9928-0-28022200-1406286997_thumb.jppost-9928-0-98594800-1406287017_thumb.jp

What do you think did it in Wal? Cold, dry, wind or simply a combination of all 3?

Sorry to hear that mate, it's been a colder then normal winter.

Wondering which type of Pele you had. As I understand there is the Marquesas Pele's which are the most cold sensitive then the Fiji is better and the New Caledonia is most cold tolerant??

I have some Fiji Pele's in my Hothouse which still gets pretty cold at night but obviously get going once the sun is on it.

Nice looking palm, I didn't know it was so rare! I've got 4 sprouted seeds waiting to send out their first leaves. I'm hoping to be able to get a plot of land further south at some point so I'll have a better chance keeping them alive.

Dry mainly, it was the big seed fiji one.

Did you germinate yours from seeds Andy ?

Oh sorry to miss this. I do have some plants that I purchased in 100mm long tubes and they are a good size now in 200mm pots. No signs of winter issues even though we've had a cracker of a winter here and the temps in the hothouse still get down to 3 degrees Celsius.

People I know who have never had frosts are having 3-5 this year. We've had none but still freezing some mornings.

Look out northern hemisphere, next winter could be a doozy!

As for the seed I'm a bit worried and maybe some of you old hands can add clarity here. The seeds appear to have tried germinating or are preparing as there is a small hole that has appeared on most of them. They feel nice and heavy still so I'm hoping the roots will begin to appear soon!

Attached a few pics of the seed, proof that the temp is good and also the setup minus the foam lid over the top and a couple of bricks to press the lid down and keep the temp warm.

I think that if there is a hole in the seed like that then the seed has germinated at some point and then the emerging root has rotted away leaving the hole.

Hoping that's not true Neil, just had a look at the Fiji seeds and one has sprouted!

Did a quiet jig when I found that!

Seems the Marquesas seeds are doubtful but hope for the Fiji seed... others are looking good still.
