I saw these inflorescence starting to from sometime earlier in the year. There are two of these on the palm. post-7504-0-10969800-1406234279_thumb.jppost-7504-0-66871300-1406234294_thumb.jppost-7504-0-50487200-1406234383_thumb.jpOdd that they are shooting from the base of the plant, right? The plant is only 7 ft tall, and not very old. The Cyrtostachys on the opposite side of the pond has been in my care for over 10 years, at least 12 ft tall, and just showing its first sign of inflorescence on some trunk. I was hoping that during the biennial tour, someone would be able to give me some insight to this, but I never heard anything. Anyone else have this occurring with their Cyrtostachys?

Tim - I believe their inflorescences are produced below the crownshaft. Must be all the soil amendments you undertook to make it so happy.

I have no real explanation but, I have seen premature flowering on many palms over the years. My Dypsis prestoniana (8') put a good size flower recently. It was only a couple of feet off the ground. Any seeds?? :floor:

Mutant!

Seriously though Tim, it may be a reaction to stress of some kind in the past...knowing these things, it could even result from a dry soil mix for a single day....only guessing of course!

I have seen them with 'bulls horns' similar to that at the base, except they grew leaves, not flowers.

Very strange though!

I can see the Moose coming on here in a couple of years now and bumping this thread asking, "How's the seed coming along"? :)
