PRA in Mobile, Alabama

I got a few hours on Thursday morning in Mobile, Al. Any private gardens to drive by, be invited to see, nurseries to visit, other publicly palmy sites to see before I head home at noon? Point me in the right direction or invite me over.

Kind of figured this would be a no-reply thread as Mobile, Al is not the mecca of palm gardens, but I thought I might bump it one more time for the heck of it.

Well, someone has to reply don't we now! :winkie:

Never been to Alabama and don't imagine it happening, but Google was just my friend: http://palmsunlimited.net/

Not sure if they allow visits/tours or not.

Thank you so much, I saw their site last night but did not look deep enough to notice this "Other varieties we are growing include: Mazari - Nannorrhops Ritchiana , Phoenix Sylvester, Pheonix canariansis, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus, Cycads, Livingstonia Nitida, Livingstonia Decipiens, Copernicia Alba, and more varieties we are testing out."

Nannorrhops Ritchiana and Livingstonia Nitida are on my long wanted list. They are wholesale only, but should honor my Louisiana Landscape Horticulturalist License which does allow me to buy wholesale. Now, those are stated as test plants, so whether they are really for sale and what their minimum purchase requirements are could be an issue.

I will stop by there in the morning. I also have my eyes on another wholesale nursery very close to them concerning some custom hybridized native rhododendrons for the Gulf Coast.

We shall see, but thank you so much for showing an interest in a fellow gardeners quest.

Let us know what you find! I just picked up a 15g L. nitida, threw it in the ground, watered it, and it's already throwing new leaves and spears like buggery. Me likey.

It would be cool to know what cycads you find, too.

Livistona nitida is a no brainer in Norcal - fast, hardy and beautiful. Good for you for planting one.

Thanks Axel! I also just picked up an australis as well, which is very beautiful. I gather that may be a bit slower growing but that's OK.

The one that is frustrating me a bit is L. decora. I've understood it to be a vigorous grower, but mine are struggling a little bit/still on their first couple fronds of the year. Maybe they just need to get their roots down. I'm amping up the water so we'll see.

There I go hijacking another one of Keith's threads - let us know what you find on the PRA!

Well, it is sad to say, but I woke up Thursday morning, got in the truck, thought about nurseries and then turned the truck in the opposite direction to head home. Just wasn't into it.

I have 5 enormous 15g decora that I ran out of room for, I am sure one of them would love to find a caring owner in Clayton. :) they grow like weeds for me, impossible to kill.
