Fires in San Diego County

Sabal Steve

Recommended Posts

Just turned on tv and news said fires are burning near Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad (several homes burned and 11,000 homes/business under evaculation), Deer Springs, and Rancho Bernardo. Legoland was shut down due to fire related power outages. There's also fire in Lompoc that is 50% contained.

I don't think its arson.

that would be an extremely serious felony crime - that most folks -even if they were total knuckleheads would not want to risk.

you start a fire out here during a santa ana and they will throw murder or attempted murder charges on you.

more likely car backfire, cigarette butt or barbeque gone bad etc.....

Sometimes a spark from a vehicle or cigarette butt is all it takes in our dry conditions.

Our news up here said there was a highway shut down to put out a brush fire that had started from a car fire. Saw another clip of someone trying put out their palm tree. The flames were on it's trunk. Didn't say if that was owner caused or from blowing embers. I'd like to think none or at least the majority of these aren't arson.

Hope everything will be okay at your place Pando.

My buddy is a fireman and he seems to think that some of these are arson. Being that there were so many and all so close to freeways. Since I commute from Encinitas to santee I got to see almost all of them. They got the scripps and lakeside ones out very quickly. I could see the flames from the 67.

Here's a picture from earlier today at my place. This is looking towards the fire on Camp Pendleton. I believe there was 3 going that I could see from our place. We got a voluntary evacuation call from the sheriff department at 4:15pm. The winds have died down and it's very smoky now, but seems like the fires are calming down quite a bit.

and yet on the other hand they start all the time by cars as this example shows

yesterday was perfect condition for such fires to start and if you look at a map of the fires they all appear to have started near the shoulder of roads - I could be wrong and it was a arsonist - just saying it did not necessary have to be one

The Kaweah Fire in August 1996 was started by a car's exhaust pipe in dry grass on a road shoulder. It burned 4,479 acres, risked the safety of over 1,500 fire fighters, and cost $4 million.

But, so do witch-hunts.

Some times common sense comes into play too. 8 fires - all in North Country, all close to roads. None in South Bay, None in Orange county or LA, etc. Too much coincidence for me.

Ch 5 news in bay area just ran some lead in video footage of the SoCal fires for their 5pm news. OMG they were showing a fire-nado as they called it. Terrifying footage, like fire from hell swirling upwards. I hope people don't hesitate to leave if told to evaculate. I know several teams of firefighters from the bay are down there now. Keeping everyone in my thoughts.

BTW DoomsDave's (#5) and Keith's (#14) links above are both good sources and they keep updating the info on them. #14 will give you an update on specific areas with evacualtions.

you may be right- if the the news states that it is conclusively arson - then I shall stand corrected.

but on the other hand where were the winds extremely stronger than any other part of California including other parts of san diego ?

right in the exact spot the fires are.

LA and Orange county did not get the same winds- there was a special meteorological event which caused san diego north county to be the one special spot to get the extreme winds.

how do i know ? - I read a detailed weather prognosis issued by the national weather service.

here is the type of report which shows that san diego was in the bulls eye for a epic fire event which would be localized

DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

STRONG SANTA ANA WINDS CONTINUE ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA THIS
AFTERNOON...PARTICULARLY FOR SAN DIEGO COUNTY...AS THE FLOW IS MORE
EASTERLY. THE STRONG OFFSHORE FLOW IS BEING BROUGHT ABOUT BY STRONG
SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE GREAT BASIN AREA...ALONG WITH GOOD
UPPER LEVEL SUPPORT...AS LOCAL WRF SHOWS 55 KT EASTERLY WINDS AT 850
MB FOR TODAY. CURRENTLY...WINDS ARE GUSTING IN THE 50S/60S IN THE
SAN DIEGO MOUNTAINS/FOOTHILLS...

Hope everything will be okay at your place Pando.

Thanks, we're ok, we didn't have to evacuate, but many neighboring areas did. We had things packed just in case, as you just never know where the next flareup will happen. This was close. Thankfully for us, winds shifted today so it blew the fire east toward Escondido. Who knows what's going to happen tomorrow as this is currently just completely wild without much containment. Many people lost their homes today and yesterday, and this is just very sad. The firefighters did an absolutely awesome job though - there are lots of copters around and the DC-10 is amazing.

Regarding to the heated discussion about the cause, please, this is silly. No one knows anything for sure, so let's calm down. It could have been anything.

Moonscape in Carlsbad, looking west from Aviara Park. Second photo shows the house that burned despite great efforts to "fire proof' it. The fire snuck around the back of the retaining wall.

Looks like a few of those Carlsbad homes got burned out but many more in that neighborhood were spared which is great. Is that area now contained? I can see smoke in the distance but otherwise that area has blue skies.

As for the teenagers arrested on arson charges I doubt they rode their bikes by Camp Pendleton and elsewhere setting them. Likely just stuff in their area. Assume they will be charged as adults.

I didn't say they road their bikes around and started others. I was poking fun at Rob. The point was that some of these fires were most likely started by arson. Something Rob feels like arguing against. The Carlsbad one is now under investigation for possible arson as a guy filming the very beginning of the fire saw a guy in a golf cart come away from where flames started. So either he started it or he is just another moron smoker that throws his cigarette out and causes a fire. What ever they find out with how the Carlsbad one started, it will have a higher price to pay as my friend that is a cop over there told me someone died in the fire. They think he was a homeless guy living in a canyon. Sad.
