Moss garden?

So, you have too much shade for grass to grow. Moss is suggested as a substitute.

I have some in my garden, though I've never gotten it to grow like in the pictures.

Anyone try this, or know someone who has? Pictures? I thought this one was magnificent. Imagine how it might look in a No-Cal palm garden?

I've actually done it to a much smaller extent in South Florida, believe it or not. It took awhile to find a moss species that worked. I just kept transplanting moss from various locations until one patch had a variety in it that took off.

The main problem is keeping the weeds out of it. A type of commercial weed killer I used once killed the weeds and didn't harm the moss, but I'm not around enough to spray routinely so it constantly looks ratty. It looks better than the bare dirt that was there before though, at least it's green!

One time I had someone doing some weeding for me, the guy wanted to rip off all the moss on the rocks. LOL! Clover (green&purple) is the worst weed that comes up in moss for me.

I’m always getting native ferns coming up in moss. Free plants to give away.

I'm in the process of replacing my lawn with Diamondia margarete. I'm hoping to get away with watering only a couple times per year once established.
