Huge 7g Tahina spectabilis $300

Matt in SD

Plant pictured below. Currently acclimated to outdoors with a few hours of afternoon sun. These definitely survive and grow in Southern California, even in my particularly bad microclimate. Super healthy and ready to plant! $300, no shipping.

This is worth a hell of a lot more than $300 here on the mainland, someone better buy that sucker. I'd buy it if I lived in Socal.

Sold!

Matty, not sure what to say. It's a bit fuzzy, but I think these must be from the original, first time these were available. I got four from Jeff M back when they came out (2008?2009?). Kept two outside right from the start and they died in the first winter, after not growing at all even through summer. But the two I kept in the greenhouse grew fine. Gave one to Dennis Willoughby last year...just found out today that it recently died. That one was bigger at the time I gave it to him than the one I just sold here. They do seem to like my heavier potting mix. This one was a real beauty, sad to see it go. I have one planted that came back from Madagascar through Gary Levine that was off the first flowering plant to be discovered. It's a year older, but a bit smaller than the one in the photos above.

Boy I sure was tempted to buy this baby, and I am glad I didn't. I saw the ones at Jeff Marcus' garden, they were growing so beautifully distichous. But this is a palm only for the best Southern California climates. I have a small one that has survived in my unheated greenhouse last Winter. It's now pushing a new spear. I am going to continue to nurse it to see how big and for how long I can get it to grow, but it's gonna stay in my greenhouse rather indefinitely. I was surprised that they don't seem to mind the cool nights but only if it gets real hot during the day.

Thank you Matt for the tahina. I have a spot perfect for it which offers overhead canopy and not too far from two stucco walls. I have a b condapanna flourishing in the same location. Time to sell some ficus dammaropsis propagations to pay for it.

Just wondering what the demand for these is. I have 4 left in 7 gallon pots, from the original seed batch. I already have 7 in the ground at a few different properties, and they have all been wonderful growers in my climate. The biggest one here gets ground water from the lake which is 15 feet away, and the overall height is at least 20 feet, however not trunking yet. I am thinking about parting with the potted plants, but have no idea what they are worth??

If there was even a slim chance of them surviving in Houston, I would drive down and purchase them from you. But from what I’ve read It’s probably best to leave them for someone else

Meangreen I thought the same thing.  MB Palms has (or had, they might be all sold) a bunch of them here in Orlando.  They went through a couple of freezes, including one night with a 1 hour dip to 25F.  I'm not sure if he protected them that night, but they seem to be at least "sorta tough" to the occasional freeze.  I decided I'd leave them to more experienced growers with a better chance of them surviving to flowering.  Now I kinda wish I'd bought a 1g or 3g size when they were available!

If they were comparable or close to Bismarckia I would try them, I’ll wait for more evidence. I bought Corypha Utan seeds, Ive read claims of them taking low 20’s.

True, my notes on Corypha have Lecomtei being slightly tougher than Utan but both taking "minor to major damage @ 26F, defoliated during the extended 2009 29F Leu Gardens freeze but recovered."  At that same freeze a young Tahina took minor burn out in the open at Leu, so it *might* be tougher than Coryphas.

I'm still waiting for pictures from Oliver!  :D:D:D

There have been none available for years. We will have to wait for another one in Madagascar to flower & set seeds. That may be many more years.

There are a few growers in South Florida that have filed grown available.  I know of one in a 25G container available.

Here's to a buyer with really deep pockets stepping up to give one a good home. They hate being potted.
