Palms and the Color Purple

Thought I'd add a bit of color to the board and the purple is the flavor to brighten the day. Been so rainy here the past few weeks, wish I could send some to the west coast.

A little over 16" (406mm) the past 10 days, so it's soggy to say the least. Anyway, let's start off with the color of a Heterospathe, the species of which I've never been sure of.

More of a Pinanga caesia and even the dead leaves, (the last photo), are beautiful. The inflorescence is nothing short of spectacular as well.

Check out these purple hues. Base of Bentinckia condapanna, Iguanura wallichiana, and Pinanga speciosa.

The color on this Archontophoenix purpurea almost looks like metal some days. The color varies from light purple to lavender, so upright and proper too.

The last of the purple bunch are the Dictyocaryum lamarckianum. The one is much larger than the rest, but the smaller ones are starting to show color.

Cool post Tim, thanks for brightening our days. Really wish I could get a Dictyocaryum to live here, must

be because it is not as damp as Hilo.

Here is the closest purple shot I have. Next time you come over to Honolulu, hopefully

we can go up to Lyon again and see some more rare stuff, like this

Tim, beautiful pics of your "Always Lush" Palms :greenthumb: Great to view, thanks for sharing.

It was the driest Summer on record here but the D/caryums where not phased at all, I didnt want the seedlings planted out in dry though so they are still very happy in the 400mm pot for now.

Thanks Colin, oh yeah, I'd almost kill for that little Pinanga.

Pete, looking good there. Your D.lamarckianum are healthy and happy.

NApalm, thanks and Bob, you ought to see them in person, even more saturated colors.

Nice Colin, is that the one they call the 'candy cane' palm? Mine are nice and purple and getting tall. Still don't know the difference between D. mirabilis and D. faneva.

Ya, looks like it. Seems to be a few different flavors of this type. This one of two that I got as

a tall one gallons from Jeff. Super nice height and in great shape and color considering the size pot. Hope

it likes the ground just as much.

Boy Joe that is a 'chunk'. Beautiful color too, is that a trait particular to the species?

Great pics!

That Hyophorbe's crownshaft (which was a surprise) has become a deeper purple, almost black, with age. I've heard of others, but haven't seen any.

Tim

Tim,

Thanks. It's one of my prized palms.

I have heard that some of the cheesemanii's do this but I am pretty sure it is not a consitant trait. It has not put one out as purple as this since I took the pic 2 yrs ago or so (pic was right after removal of previous frond base).

Pogobob knows of one that he has been calling the purple CS sapida, but might be a baueri variant as well, we are not sure. I am growing a ton of seedlings from that palm.

Colin,

Thanks

This palm was purchased from Jungle Music about 11 yrs ago as a 3g. Phil mentioned at one point where the seeds came from but I forgot who it was. They are from a local garden somewhere in CA I think.

Thanks Paul!

Tim,

Thanks for starting a great thread and showing off some beautiful palms. :) I don't think we'll ever get tired of seeing these dramatic colors on our palms. I know I don't... :mrlooney: And I enjoyed everyone else's photos as well! Thanks!
