How'd you fare in the quake tonight Dave? Looks like it was centered right on you.

Just saw the news open with the LaHabra earthquake. Know we have a number of members in that area. Hope no one had damage. From what I'm seeing a lot of LA area people felt this one.

It was in the 5's, so usually that just means that it felt strong for only the people right near it. Usually no major damage from those.

Just saw the news. I hope no one (including my daughter at Harvey Mudd College) sustained any damage. She'd been wanting to feel an earthquake as she's slept through the others so far. Of course it's way to early to contact her now.

Well, I've been in Ohio, a break from the Living PRA since Sunday.

If it's a 5, likely no damage.

Sounds better than results from modestly larger quakes in Virginia and Oklahoma. The Washington Monument will reopen soon, as repairs come to an end, and it seems the National Cathedral managed to find funds to repair damaged stonework.

Newspaper reports include concerns about the Los Angeles water system (a bunch of breaks).

If Dave returns home from Ohio and finds his Parajubaea torallyi lying on its side, we'll know what the cause of this temblor was...

I didn't feel a thing...

The weight of lies will bring you down / And follow you to every town / Cause nothin happens here

That doesn't happen there / So when you run make sure you run / To something and not away from

Cause lies don't need an aero plane / To chase you anywhere

The shaking was pretty noticeable here in Riverside. First the up and down motion, followed by the sideways motion. The time between the two indicates the distance from the epicenter sort of like the time between the thunder and lightning. But I don't know how to calculate it. The shear waves just propagate at slower speeds than the up and down movement.

There was no earthquake weather, though, strange.

(In case you wonder, here's the bit on earthquake weather on Wikipedia)

Some recent research has found a correlation between a sudden relative spike in atmospheric temperature 2-5 days before an earthquake. It is speculated that this rise is caused by the movement ofions within the earth's crust, related to an oncoming earthquake. However, the atmospheric changes are caused by the earthquake, rather than causing it. Furthermore, this relative change would not cause any single recognizable weather pattern that could be labelled "earthquake weather".[6][7]
