Hello, all, I'm pleased to announce that we are meeting at two Whittier, CA gardens on November 16, 2013.

Garden No. 2 is Sergio, "Got Palms" place.

I'm salivating . . . .

THE PSSC’s November 16, 2013 Meeting

David Bleistein

Your PSSC President

We are greatly pleased to announce that the PSSC is having its meeting in Whittier at two gardens that have never been visited before.

Garden one: Herb and Connie Johnson, at 10513 Messina Dr Whittier, CA 90603-2425.

Garden two: Sergio and Maria Burciaga, 13811 Philadelphia Street, Whittier, CA 90601-3803.

These two gardens are only a few minutes apart. Both are established gardens where many unusual and rare species will be seen. There will be an auction and raffle at the second garden. This will be a POTLUCK meeting, so bring a dish to share with others at garden #2, the Burciaga garden. Chairs will be furnished for the general meeting. Water and soft drinks will be offered at a nominal charge.

GARDEN NUMBER ONE: Home and garden of Herb and Connie Johnson, at 10513 Messina Dr Whittier, CA 90603-2425. Mr. Johnson describes himself as a “small time collector with a garden containing approximately 50 palms and 75 cycads.” He started collecting about 10 years ago, mainly cycads. One day, he was working in the neighborhood of Louis and Carol Hooper and noticed their beautiful yard full of rare palms. Herb stopped to talk to Mr. Hooper about his palms. Herb purchased his first palm, a Dypsis species from the Hoopers, and that's where his passion for palms began.

The Johnsons are particularly proud of their three Chambeyronia macrocorpa in the front yard. Spanish moss is in abundance hanging in a unique olive tree and throughout the yard. They just recently completed planting several palms and cycads that have been growing in containers for quite a while. Although the collection is small compared to most gardens it's definitely worth a look! This garden shows that a garden does not have to be big to be a gem.

GARDEN NUMBER TWO: Home and garden of Sergio (GotPalms) and Maria Burciaga, 13811 Philadelphia Street, Whittier, CA 90601-3803. Like the Johnson garden, the Burciaga garden is a gem, only much larger. High in the hills above Whittier, this garden has it all: rare palms, elegant hardscape, all in vivid color.

The Burciagas have many large Dypsis, Chambeyronia, and other palms of New Caledonia and Madagascar, at sizes you would not expect in a garden as relatively new as this one. Highlights include: Dypsis leptocheilos, with about 4 feet of trunk; trunking Roystoneas; and many more too numerous to list. The Burciagas have set off their collection with a meticulously trimmed emerald green lawn. Come and see this garden, then remember it for when it grows up and we see it again in the future!

There will be a potluck lunch and plant auction. Chicken will be provided; other courses that you like would be greatly appreciated. Not sure what to bring? I you like it, chances are, so will the rest of us. Salad, side dish, dessert, all are appreciated. You don’t even have to cook it yourself. If you buy it and bring it, we’ll eat it.

For the auction please bring rare palms. Please, no Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia, etc. The best sizes are in 1 to 5 gallon pots.

Hi Dave,

Would love to come see you guys in Whittier today. Unfortunately, my daughter is playing in the title game for her soccer league. Hope everyone has a great time, and please take copious amounts of pictures.

I don't think we met . . .

Was that you sitting in the front at the auction, with the one-liners?
