History Summary from Nelson:

In 2005 the Museum of Local History in Fremont, Ca. received a donation of Palms from Edith and Erik Bergstrom. These palms were going to be planted in the Fremonts Park system. However, later the city turned down the palms because of the maintenance requirements. Consequently, the palms sat for a couple of years in their containers waiting for a new home. Hugh Danaher and his wife Edna cared for the collection in their backyard in the Niles District of Fremont. Another collection was also being cared for in Newark. Many of these palms were donated by other members of the palm society. There is a good selection of Sabal palms from Bob Fowler. And many of the palms also came from our palm society auctions and South Coast Palm Nursery.

The Tri City area is well known for old stands of palms. Places like the Saint Mary of the Palms, The Shinn Arboretum, The Masonic Home, The California Nursery Historic Park, Ohlone College, and Palmdale Estates are examples of early plantings.

Union City wanted to plant the palms. Nelson changed jobs and became Public Works Supervisor of the City of Union City Grounds Division. By July 2007 a volunteer Eagle Scout project was being planned to plant many of the palms around the William Cann Civic Center Park lagoon. Brain Burckhardt of the Boy Scouts of America Troop #110 palm planting plan was approved! Finally the palms have found a home. Nearly 80 palms were planted around the lagoon. Also a church group added a collection of blue palms next to the library. The palm plantings started two years before the citys 50th anniversary and continued for another four years after. The theme plantings of palms marked the 50th anniversary. More palm plantings around town can be seen on map attached.

Many thanks to Edith and Erik Bergstroms generous gift to the Museum of Local History and in turn their generous gift to our city and other generous donations and support from members of the Northern California Palm Society!

The Wotus Garden

Los Gatos, CA.

Sept. 14th

1-5pm

potluck and auction

Diane & Jim Wotus’ garden began as an idea in the fall of 2004, and turned into a passion in the spring of 2005 when they dug out the 30+ year old orange tree with a trunk that spanned almost 2 feet and replaced it with their first palms; 3 Syagrus romanzoffiana and 1 Chamaerops humilis (var. cerifera) all purchased from Ray Laub...(their

first " palm dealer"!!).

From that time on, Diane was hooked, and Jim has gone along for the ride. (Jim likes to say that Diane buys the palms and he digs the holes…) The Syagrus are now nearly 16 feet tall...but the "Chammy" is the star and a personal favorite of Diane’s. It is as blue as any you will see.

Being located in the Blossom manor of Los Gatos (between Los Gatos-Almaden and Blossom Hill Roads) allows for some pretty significant temperature swings. Winter can get as low as 26-28 Deg F (for at least a few weeks if not more) – and the summers average 80-90 degrees, with sustained highs close to 100 deg F. It’s this summer heat that allows the palms to flourish and helps them recover from any minor damage they may suffer from the winter cold.

Under the tutelage of Dave Sylvia and Eric Christensen, Diane and Jim’s palm collection has grown significantly. They now have almost 60 varieties with over 120 planted. The larger palms include; 2 Butia x Syagrus crosses, a Brahea edulis, a Sabal and both a Jubaea spectabilis (chilensis) and a Bujubaea that was purchased from Patrick at the last palm meeting at Dick Douglas’s house. During another visit to Dick’s house, Diane received a Brahea elegans which is proudly planted in the front parking strip.

When you visit the garden, you will see that the “bones” rely on hardy palm varietals that will withstand the large temperature swings – but interspersed you will find some more tender and rare specimens. What you won’t find is Jim’s dream palm – a Bismarkia nobilis. Several samples from Ray’s Palo Alto collection were transported to Los Gatos – but none survived the winters.

In addition to the palms, you will find an abundant collection of cactus, succulents and bromeliads in a manicured residential setting. The larger cactus specimens came from Inge Hoffmann’s garden...another friend and mentor.

This garden is an excellent example of what can be done to transform a typical suburban front and backyard into a tropical oasis – in just a little over 8 years. What it may lack in acreage it certainly makes up for in variety and curb appeal.

Address:

16100 Escobar avenue

Los Gatos ca. 95032

Exit highway 17 at lark avenue or highway 85 at bascom avenue.

In either case, take Los Gatos blvd south toward down down Los gatos

Turn left onto Los Gatos-almaden road

At the 4th street turn right onto longwood drive.

We are at the stop sign of longwood and Escobar. You won't miss the palms!
