Posted 26 Jun 2013 Bobs favorite tree he told me to grow in SoCal is the coconut. So when we road by the Del Mar one we had to check in. It's really turning into a beautiful specimen to rival any in the tropics.
Posted 26 Jun 2013 lol would this be that snark that everyone indulges in in here?? You are lucky that it wasn't bearing nuts and one hit you in the head. One day that palm will be a real danger to passerbys

Must be the cooler nights we get.

Posted 27 Jun 2013 The Oceanside one was just starting to trunk... and did not survive this last winter. Removed about a month ago or so
Posted 27 Jun 2013 Id grow a coconut in a soil mix, heavy in pumice like Jeff Marcus does in his pots. I'd dig a 4 ft deep hole, empty a large wheel barrel full of pumice water daily during the summer and not at all during the winter. I once had a papaya over winter here with a mix like that.... Till it got hit by freezing temps, but the roots were great.
Posted 27 Jun 2013 Now that the coconut has been a proven success in Del Mar, why not try a Lodoicea maldivica? It should grow to be the real Coco del Mar (Coco de Mer).
Posted 27 Jun 2013 why try? even in the most protected spots, you still have to stare at something like that in your yard. Its sad to hear about "the oceanside one". that tree was probably the best looking one in so cal, but even still, couldnt survive long term.

Posted 27 Jun 2013 This is why the coconut in Newport does so well (hum, relatively speaking). Sorry, my wife isn't going to come and hug your coconut in Del mar.
Posted 27 Jun 2013 The Newport Beach Coconut is obviously getting all the attention! Here's Kim with California's best known Cocos nucifera.

I'm surprised that coconut is still alive considering that it always seems to look cold damaged
Posted 27 Jun 2013 The Newport Beach Coconut is obviously getting all the attention! Here's Kim with California's best known Cocos nucifera. Can't you hear what that coconut is saying "brrr, it's freakin' freezing here, I'd say get me outa here, but I'm getting all these hugs from all these beautiful women!".

Posted 27 Jun 2013 That Raoul coconut is even better than the Newport craponut! Someone in Newport please put that thing down?
Posted 27 Jun 2013 That Raoul coconut is even better than the Newport craponut! Someone in Newport please put that thing down? I find the Newport Coconut to be incredibly valuable. I view it as the best this species will ever be in Southern California, and it has permanently dissuaded me of ever trying to grow one anywhere in California. I hope it stays alive so that the next generation of palm growers doesn't repeat the follies of the previous generation.
Posted 27 Jun 2013 until the large box stores quit trying to pawn these coconuts off to unsuspecting buyers in southern california, you're going to have plenty of novice gardeners giving them a try. I have driven past the newport coconut plenty of times, but have never stopped to hug it. what does the sign below it say?

I have driven past the newport coconut plenty of times, but have never stopped to hug it. what does the sign below it say? If my memory serves me right, the sign says something like: cocos nucifera, Northern Most coconut on the West Coast. Who put that sign there? I took a close up of the sign, I'll have to dig around my photos to see if I can find it. IMHO, the coconuts we have growing here in Santa Cruz as shown in the picture below are far healthier. Our warf was recently remodeled.
