Hey Esther, theres a guy, Tony in Texas whose garden looks like this every year. I guess he gets some heat in summer because his palms are BIG. I hope your palms can get through this severe winter. Can you protect the bud on the Trachy or Euro.. or whatever is below the snow?

Outstanding photos! Are you concerned about the palm's survival? :bemused:

These palms will survive the cold without problems. Its always a bit weird...snow on palms... but these can handle it. sometimes they will show leafburn but they recover fast from that.

The bike is not ok, but it was broken already, thats why its outside and not inside...

Alberto youre dutch is great i am impressed!

Snow on Trachycarpus is a lovely sight-although I know that they are not usually damaged-I am wondering if the weight of snow and ice ever breaks any of the fronds or results in bud injury.

the snow and ice can damage the leafs, they can break, but most of the time the snow slips of the leafs. Because of the weight the leafs bend to the floor and the snow slips off..

Hello,

what do you think is better, to let the snow on leaves or remove it?

its hard to tell ..remove or not. I know people here that remove snow from the leafs, but i personally think its isolation and protect the leafs, only when it is getting to heavy maybe. They protect the fruit-trees and other plants here against this late cold by spraying water on it like the picture i found on internet

Its been cold here too-last year we were enjoying the warmest March in history

...a week of temps in the 80-84F range with lows in the 60F area.

15F above average in 2012,so far about 15F below average in 2013-

-mother nature seems content to balance that all out this year!

I think the snow is picturesque on the palms. Hopefully they hold up with no permanent damage. How many hours are you at below freezing?

Love the photos of the shoreline. Is that in Croatia dalmatiansoap? Curious what zone that would be and what the two palms pictured are.

I'm anxious for spring to get here already myself. We've had an interesting winter with a number of hours below freezing this season. Not much rain really. Wednesday is the first day of spring and we're suppose to get a drenching. Yesterday all the Branson pear trees in our area were in total bloom and today they are covered in leaves suddenly. We were just saying it's time to fertilize the palms for spring today. Hope warm weather is ahead real soon for both of you.

No such thing like that picture here last week. No snow, just cold but also not that cold, i've seen lower in March! That march was followed by a incredible hot July (2006), that month had a day average from more then 29C here. The last few years spring was mostly warmer then average, so hopefully this cold start of spring bring us a bloody hot summer! :)

today is terrible again. The wind is blowing a windforce 8 (we are isolated, the ferry is not leaving because of the hard wind)

the temp is around 0 celsius but with the windforce 8 it feels like -15 celsius (windchill) a great start from spring...not

WIndchill makes it horrible to be outside indeed, and there is no visuable spring weather coming either, well not very soon. :(

Can't unload my greenhouses, so no room to sow seeds or pot up some stuff. Hopefully this will not last too long, otherwise it could be a rubbisch start of the growing season again.
