Both nice palms Ray. I think comparison photos at various stages can be very helpful to anyone thinking of planting either or both. Nice that both palms appear to be around the same size so over time your photos will be even more illustrative once the mule gets going. BTW I'm not familar with the term calipher relative to palms. Please educate.

One thing I have noticed with our butia, is that while it has grown noticeably in crown height and new fronds, can't say I've seen any real trunk growth yet. I know that it is a slow grower and takes many years before getting any appreciable trunk. The canopy looks great and has flowered twice I think since being transplanted. I'm going to enjoy watching this one in our yard. I should pull out some comparison photos over the last two years. Ours started out older than yours but is a bit on the blueish side as well.

Thanks. I knew about 1a&b, and 2 as to paper (friend in the paper/printing business) but wasn't aware there was such a device used in forestry for diameters of tree trunks. Assumed it was done by a tape I guess.

Growing into a nice looking mule. How high is the top of your shed behind it? Trying to get an idea of the mule's height now and using that as a reference point. It's grown quite a lot in a year.

One of the things I love about mules, and why we have three of them, is that the canopies can be pretty large. They are our "shade trees" in our yard. Yours is going to be a beauty and give you some nice shade. A seldom seen palm in my area of the country and such a shame because they grow so well here and are stunning palms in the landscape and from a distance in the skyline.
