Commemorative Photo Gift for Nong Nooch

Annika

Recommended Posts

For those of you interested, Daryl and I are looking to organize a batch of photos as a commemorative gift to Nong Nooch. We have created an email address designated this.

If you would like to contribute, please send up to 5 (or more if you must :winkie: ) of your favorite photos from the grounds of Nong Nooch. Please title images with your name, such as Smith1, Smith2, Smith3.

We will work with the photos and add some text, i.e. IPS Biennial 2012, to the image in nice font. We will be sending the gift in the form of a cd (and maybe even a couple of large prints - wink wink, hang this on your walls!) to Nong Nooch later this year in thanks and maybe even do something more with the photos, such as a calendar.

The email address for this is:

2012biennialphotos@gmail.com

Send photos in original sizes please so we have lots of res to play with! Once we get it rolling we can share a thread showing what we've done with all the pics too.

P.S. The idea came because with all the great gear and great photographers there, we know between us all we have a bunch of stellar shots and thought it would make an excellent and unexpected gift. Would be a cool thing also if they chose to print them large size for some of their facilities! I personally think a bunch of IPS photographers work would look great at that place too!

H Baum...."so theory" ^_^ I love it. You taught me something new. Now I need to remember when to say it appropriately!!! Yippee- glad people are interested .

Apaandssa- 2200 photos!!!! Wow! You definitely have MANY stunners in there!!!

Rafael- thank you for avatar compliment. But at Nong Nooch I really was not the photographer! I barely got any palm pics. I got some nice landscape stuff but I recognized that there was a lot of great equipment around & I know this group has a lot of great photographers. There were some moments I simply did not document because I knew I could see them here and I wanted to take a break. Well, I was sort of constantly taking a break :innocent:

Annika,

That's a great idea, and we should make this request known to all Biennial participants. Many of them are not active here on PalmTalk. I'll see what I can do... And what about making the CD available to those who may be interested?

Pappa- Can you get an email distro list to me, or I can give the message to whoever is the keeper of the distro list to mail out? I wondered about that too- the fact that not everyone is on Palm Talk (even many who are could simply not see the thread also).

Making the CD available for those interested is totally do-able. Also, we can create a Dropbox folder for the photos and that's even quicker for people to access. -Annika

Good idea!

Still in Bangkok, but will look at my photos when I get home. Should be one or two out of

hundreds. Really nice meeting the Palmtalk folks, that was a highlight for sure.

I just had to say hello to Tim (very nice to meet you at the Biennial!). It still amazes me that I can read something written by someone from Hawaii who is in Thailand just moments after it's written! Yet I'm in my Virginia Beach house headed to work in an hour or so having just enjoyed my newest issue of Palms over breakfast! Still haven't really looked at all my photos, but will enjoy doing so soon. Everybody has at least one or two they could submit!

SW_FL_Palms wrote me with a great sugggestion regarding this gift so with her permission just reposting the idea here:

"Since Kampon hired photographers and gave us all a cd of the event, maybe IPS attendees could do something a little different. (Otherwise, it is like giving someone a gift card for Christmas and they give you one back. )

How about asking people to submit comments, thank yous, fond moments along with the photos. I think that would be more meaningful to Kampon. I think Kampon would like having the feedback along with photos."

I think it's a great idea. Daryl & I are still tossing around ideas on how to "handle" the photos and make it extra special and I think this idea works as well. Of course, it's a collaborative effort so will rely on people's contributions....

For those of you on Facebook - Something we can do for Nong Nooch Gardens tourism is to Like them on Facebook. They only have 191 likes.

I'm sure everyone who attended the biennial liked the gardens. I think NNBG would appreciate the free publicity to draw more tourists and horticulturists.

This is a expert from their Facebook page:

It now boasts the world's largest collections of Palms, Cycads, Bromeliads, Heliconia's and Ginger along with Thailand's largest collections of orchids.

Dear Annika, what an incredible idea!

I was looking over the one thousand plus shots of Nong Nooch that I took and can't imagine that there are any that Kampon doesn't already have in his collections. So I began to think how this tribute can be especially meaningful to Kampon and I thought of his mother. On several occasions he mentioned that it was his Mom who helped him inspire his vision and desire to have the most beautiful palm garden in the world. If I am correct, his mother was a well known actress in Thailand, perhaps including some old photographs of her would make this special gift more personal...just a thought.

It was good meeting you and so many other IPS members that will become friends as time goes on. We just touched down in Guatemala and cannot stop thinking of the amazing trip we had and largely due to Kampon and his staff at Nong Nooch. What fun. What memories.

warm regards,

Peter

In reviewing and sorting photos, I'm still not sure which, if any, of mine would be useful. I have various "views" of Nong Nooch which I enjoy, but they don't top those in the book he gave us. I have MANY of individual species, but unless he's interested in making a photo encyclopedia of his collection they may not qualify for this project. Of course I have pictures of people enjoying themselves, party and food photos showing his grand hospitality and nursery collection photos. Lastly I may have some photos trying to capture the beauty/majesty of these trees that don't really fit in the other categories such as shots looking up or leaf close ups. Maybe the last group is what you want???

That would be the best! We enjoy pictures of the palms but he is enjoying the palms in person. Maybe he will enjoy an unusual view, like a closeup, that he might not notice. But above all, I'm sure he will love the most people enjoying his creations and life's work. Maybe pictures of people back in their gardens after having implemented something inspired in Nong Nooch.

Peter- nice words!!! Well, the good idea fairy frequents my house (I just need to bake some special treats that the "execute project" fairy also likes so she comes around more!) and tonight I thought that perhaps to simplify the project and make it acheivable as well and add that personal touch, would be to create a nice large landscape style photobook with all the images (for example from Blurb.com). People can have one photo per page and add their comment and name. It would be a great memento and something personal for Kampon.

I remember the touching things Kampon said about his mother but I would not really be comfortable searching out her photos and including them in any photo project I am helping to organize....

But I think amongst those of us here who feel we have something to share and want to contribute we can put together a faboulous set of prints and/or a beautiful photobook!

1st- I hope Darryl also pops in over here with his two cents as we are collaborators on getting this project done :winkie: It seems like perhaps the most meaningful photos would certainly be the ones of people enjoying themselves. Obviously, the Paparazzi was out in force and Nong Nooch captured scores upon scores of great images from the Biennial but I think it's still a nice idea if we from our end put together a little something something with our own comments and gratitude.

PHOTOBOOK IDEA- fresh off the mind press

There's a few really great advantages with the photobook idea:

It is a project I can execute quite readily. If people continue sending their photos to the email below, along with a little comment I can create a lovely large landscape photo book that we can send to Kampon soon.

2012biennialphotos@gmail.com

The really wonderful thing about Blurb.com is that in addition to having great photobook layouts & prices, once you create a book you can also put it up for others to buy. So others who might be interested in buying this book as another collective memento can just get it right off of Blurb. I will figure this aspect out more and obviously this is not for profit and books will simply be available at cost. Blurb is pretty decently priced.

Send up to 10 photos by November 15th. Then we can work with what people sent (and include some previews of the comment/photo layouts here) and will be putting together the book - hopefully even in time for people to order it as a Christmas gift if they so choose!!!

Looking forward to it!

Great idea Annika! I think we could put together a great book with people photos for Kampon. The palms at Nong Nooch are (mostly) there for the duration. The people come and go. The 2012 Biennial was certainly an event, and the people are what 'made' the event. Some will never return again. What better idea than to remind Kampon of the event than by presenting photos of all of the delegates enjoying themselves. I know he had his team put together the DVD, but I think we can create some dramatic photos of IPS members in their element!
