It's always difficult to know what to do in these situations. A forum member passes away, yet he is apparently not missed. Mark Peters was always a very engaging, warm and positive person in his posts. I knew him away from the forum, through email, as customer of mine. He had no fear of trying to grow exotics all the way up in Monifieth, Scotland. I sold him a Joey palm which he was thrilled to own, and later a small Aiphanes seedling. Mark gave us forewarning of his illness on PalmTalk last September, but continued to post his usual, upbeat comments and compliments on the forum until his last. That was on October 20th 2011 in the aptly-titled, "Nice morning and general palmyness". Just the kind of upbeat, laid-back type of topic that would attract his attention!

For PalmTalkers who exist almost exclusively through the Internet, it's a tough call to write an obituary when nobody knows to inform you 100%. However, given the details he left us regarding his illness, and the chance discovery of a Management Committee Meeting report for the Monifieth Befriending Scheme, it seems unthinkable not to post notice of his passing here on PalmTalk.

From the Project Co-ordinators at the Monifieth Befriending Scheme:

"I am sure many of you will be saddened to hear of the death, at 33yrs old, of Mark Peters, who became a volunteer in 2009. He was diagnosed, in May 2011, with an aggressive, rare cancer and died on 16th Nov.2011. He made a very brave decision to refuse risky surgery, in favour of quality of life for the few months left to him. Lindsey & I kept in touch whilst ever he could e-mail or phone & only learned of his death this week. His family do not live locally but our thoughts are with his parents & sister." Source: PDF file

Mark, you were a pleasure to know in the short, 2 years that you were a member of this forum, and are already missed. Rest in Peace.

John, thanks for posting this. I didn't even know that he was sick. Sorry to hear about his passing at such a young age.

Thanks for posting this, John. I read that he was very ill but haven't heard anything else for a long while. He was far too young for this. RIP Mark.

Thank You John for posting this. I am saddened as I suspect we all are.. even today, I was thinking would anyone know if I was gone?

I read back thru his post about his illness. Mark was more brave in the face of his impending death Than I could ever hope to be.

Rest well Now Mark.. tend your garden with vigor

Troy, I'm not a member of that forum, although I've heard it discussed a lot on the EPS forum. Was he a regular contributor? Perhaps you could mention this topic, if he was. Mark wasn't a member of the EPS, I know that much.

Mark was a lovely bloke and it is so sad to think about him passing and at such a young age too. He will be missed very much.

Wow, this is so tragic. He was so young. I read the post that you refer to John where he told us of his situation, and all I can say is that he was one calm and very brave bloke. May he rest in peace.
