We are selling our home of 35yrs and moveing to Vista. This is an opportunity to purchase a one of a kind home and garden in perhaps the most mild coastal property in California. Many of you have been here and know of the palms and other plants in the garden.

If you are interested, PM me and we can talk. The property will go on the multiple listing this weekend so this is an early opportunity to make an offer.

Good Luck Bob - I know exactly how you feel leaving a garden after 30+ years and starting over. It's a great adventure.

Thanks Dean, I used to think about you back when you made your move to Hawaii, and I wondered how difficult it might be to leave your awsome garden in Cali. But we have gone back and forth for many years about moving to a more rural and relaxed area. Once Braden and I got Willowbrook up and running and all the time spent down there it became more clear to us that it was a good move. When I would come back from His palce and drive into my neighborhood I feel clausterphobic. I am tired of hearing my neighbors toilet seat slamming, freeway noise and all the cops, highway patrol, state park rangers, boarder patrol, military police, and homeland security agents that seem to have such a heavy presence here.

Time to start a new life for the second half! :)

I have been thinking of moving to Southern California and saw this thread. Very nice place! Unfortunately, you shouldn't have mentioned the slamming toilets. Other than that, I was ready to buy!

Here is a big teddy x tri I dug out yesterday. These bad boys have crazy root systems. This was not a easy dig! We had to make a wood ramp to get it out and into a 30'' box.

I know what you mean, Bob! I would have a place in the middle of 600 acres if I could. Where we live has lots of over 1 acre. There are 10 on our street. 5 of themare empty and I hope they stay that way!

Good luck with the new place.

Look at all the boxes and buckets. You have a lot of digging and hard work ahead of you.

That's the same reason we moved to our new place and why my parents moved to Alpine. It gets old listening to your tweeker neighbors beat on each other every night and have the cops called and loud parties every weekend etc.

Good luck Bob and welcome to San Diego. Living away from traffic and the city is a great feeling, you will enjoy the change. When I first moved to my place 15 years ago it took several weeks to sleep because I was use to freeway noise and now it was so quiet I could hear every cricket, bird, racoon walking on my porch, it was crazy adjusting to the peace. You will definately love the adventure but unlike Dean in Hawaii, it will be a lot longer to get a new garden going in So Cal. You need to head over to your sons nursery and clean out half his stock, including that giant MacDonnellii. Braden might be locking up his gate, haha! See you in So Cal.

I think this place is frostfree as some of the foliage plants in the surrounding propertieshave bannanas agave atenuata are huge and perfect. Also lots of avacados. our place is hilltop with views 360 deg.with views of mt palomar, the Santa Margarita mts. and the ocean. The previous owners says he has seen light frost a couple time in the 8 yrs they lived there. The elevation is approx 1,000ft.

We were in the planning process to remodel our house, but when I went to the city planning review meeting, they informed me that I had to make certain upgrades to the property

1. Remove several mature palms, hardscape, and install concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk!

2. Install fire suppression sprinklers thruout the house, which would mean new larger water line from the main in the street thru the front yard to the house.

Just these items would cost approx $30,000! So that was enouph to send me into a tirade and tell these commies stuff it!

Long story short; that was the last kick in the keester to get me out of San Calamity and move to where I can feel FREE AT LAST, like a pot bound palm finally planted and letting my roots run wild. Living here has been lately makeing me feel like a wildebeest, sunk up to my nads in mud with crocs and hyenas trying to tell me how they will make the rules.

These old neighborhoods will never have continuous sidewalks. My house is paid off, and if it burned down my fire insurance would cover the damage.

Actually... now that i think about it... Most of the cool palm gardens DON'T have sidewalks out front!

Never thought about that....

At 1000' feet you must be up above Warmlands Ave. That's where my dad grew up. They had avocados and fruit trees and said they rarely saw any frost on that hill.

Pogo this is an all time classic post! Thanks for the laugh. I'm in Oceanside, only a couple miles away from Braden's place at Willowbrook and am hoping to make it over to check out the nursery sometime this summer. Welcome to the neighborhood and good luck with the new place.

Dude I feel your pain. The city I live in did the same crap to my remodel. Underground power from across the street $15-$20k (I would have been the only house with underground power), Fire sprinklers $5k. Not to mention the permit fees and anything else they would have tacked on in the process. I settled on a much smaller remodel and left the city out of it. Good luck with the new place.

congrats, bob! have you thought about what you'll do differently when you start your new garden? :hmm:

The new garden will have many of my offspring from the old garden, of course. I will plant palms according to what exposures are best suited to different species. More cycads than before naturally, and fruit trees. There are existing huge cycas revolutas, a few avacado trees, orange trees and cherimoya. First of all I need to chainsaw several junipers, pines, and ficus. There is also one big CIDP and a Washy thats 80ft tall that will remain.

I'm really lucky that Braden has encuraged me to remove many good sized palms with his help and some of his friends, so It's not like I'm starting with tiny palms. Looks like late June or early July when we close escrow. The cool thing is the house is turnkey and I can concentrate on the landscape mostly. :) I'm really stoked to get on it!

The Cyphkentia was palnted about 2 yrs ago from a 5 gal and was an easy dig. we got all the roots and within 2 days of relocation at its new owners garden it opened a leaf. We got approx a 15 gal rootball and the overall size of the palm is 1.5m.
