Dear Palm Friends:

The next meeting of the Northern California Palm Society will be at Edith and Erik Bergstrom’s two acre garden in Atherton. It will begin at 1:00pm with the usual potluck lunch, followed by a garden tour and an auction/meeting.

Palms in the original garden began to be planted in 1990 after a major rebuilding of the existing house. Edith redesigned the garden and the first palms (now giants) were planted from one and five gallon cans.

In January, 2003 the lot next door was purchased, and over a period of more than a year at least 25 large truck loads of free top soil were brought in by an excavator. (He otherwise would have had to pay to dispose of it.) Many tons of compost were added, mixed and formed into the large berms Edith designed. She began planting palm trees on the part of the property that was not under construction in late 2003, but the work accelerated in 2005 after completion of the house addition and the indoor swimming pool. The pool area includes appropriate plantings and a two headed Syagrus romanzoffiana.

There are approximately 150 species and more than 400 palms of all sizes and shapes. You will be surprised at the rapid growth some have attained since the last meeting in 2008.

At the auction there will be rare and rarely offered young palms including: Syagrus yungasensis, Ceroxylon parvifrons, Trachycarpus takil and Trachycarpus nanus.

Scott and Cyndi Stanfield welcome you to their home and palm garden in North Berkeley. Their 80+ palms (and many cycads and tree ferns) were planted by the late Tom Roe, also a member of the IPS, over the past 4 decades on a third of an acre. The house is a fully-restored grand Victorian built over 123 years ago. The Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association recently bestowed their top award to the house in 2012.

Among some of the garden highlights are a mature Jubaea chilensis (now with 'coquitos' for the first time), several Raphis and Caryotas, a large multi-trunk Phoenix reclinata, a Ceroxylon, an 8' Juania australis.

Getting here is easy: from I-80, take the Gilman Exit. Follow Gilman east until it runs into Hopkins. Make a left on Hopkins, then an immediate left on Albina. Look for 8 story Norfolk Island Pine and Jubaea in the front.

Our street address is 1330 Albina Ave, Berkeley, CA 94706
