Gonzer, those are way cool! I like the cascading tillandsia! aec. fasciata albo-marg is hard to beat too!

Grrr I buy so many broms in all those lovely colours and no matter where I put them they turn green or purple/black. I've moved the rotten things so often its amazing they arent suffering from motion sickness.

JD, as far as am able to discern, this is an unregistered CV, and you may be correct that it is a 'rubra' variant....and the nudicaulis tribe seem to start differently as a offset and digress as established group.

Nevertheless, i have a very small 'rubra' that appears different.....at least i think it is somewhere in this mess

BTW, cool pic on the xBillmea Pancho.......looks like it has some Aec. recurvata in it's lineage...any clues???????

Rusty, yes it does have recurvata in it. Good eye! I suppose the inflorescence shares an affinity...

Bromeliad collectors are just as wacky as palm people , if not more. We have to bare our naked skin upon the vicious, spine-laden leaves that savagely rip and shred our appendages to the very marrow of our bones! (pretty good huh?) Hell! I've got wounds from 20 years ago that never heal up from the constant abuse the plants give me.

I like the weird ugly prickly type ones .. here is Aechmea pittieri , still not flowered it .

Aechmea contracta is another strange looking petiolate leafed species . Got several in flower now , but just love the spotty foliage .

Aechmea incompta is another pretty ugly thing , got an infl. aging into a nice pink colour .

Not good for terrestrial broms Roger. That's what I use for my Tillandsia as it is a special formulation for plants that do not have roots that interact with soil. You will notice in the ingredients that there is no nitrogen derived from Urea. Urea needs microbes in soil to break down and be used by the plant, hence this food is made for epiphytic plants. Feeding "normal" bromeliads should be done very sparingly, especially plants with colorful leaves. A fertilizer with a higher ratio of N than P or K will generally leach the colorful patterns from the leaves. For potted bromeliads my choice is "Cactus Juice"® which is a 1-7-6 formula and used only once or twice during the season. This gives my Billbergias their tight tube-like shape. Too much and you end up with floppy leaves. A splash of fish emulsion in the water is good also. Always feed bromeliads sparingly

Thanks for the reply boys, I could have mixed the names up......you know how that goes sometimes. I got most of those from Dennis Shiigi who knows them by name, no tags. I try to nail him down on names,
but not always possible. The broms are so beautiful though.

Gonzer, since you like Tillys, thought you might like to see this one.....T. 'Tropiflora'....its a fasciculata cultivar, and huge!!!

...my arm needed to be a foot longer and i could have taken a better pic!

Yessiree Rusty, Dennis has a nice plant there. The coloring of the inflorescence is what sets it apart from other fasciculata cultivars/hybrids. Those spreading types of Tillandsias take up a lot of space since the leaves aren't really geared for bending, unlike other genera.

I also agree that this is a neo, a very very nice one at that


If anyone can put a name to this one for me I would be gratefull, the following 2 photos are of the same plant growing in different conditions, more yellow in the shade and more pink in the sun (full sun!). It is an aechmea luedemanniana var??? (not alvareaz or mend?)







One of my most recent aquisitions and new favourites is this Neo "Yang"...very spikey neo. I hear there is a "Yin" to go with this "Yang"??
