What say thee? I don't see anything in our freeze damage topics. How cold will this one take?

The Riverside I had at my old place took 17F without any damage at all. It also weathered the horrid ice storm we had a few yrs back, bouncing back from the weight of the ice in no time flat!

This robust Sabal has taken everthing Tampa weather can throw at it. It was grown from seed collected from the original Riverside, Calif plant. The Riverside is on the left and a native S. palmetto is at the top of the frame.

My S. Riverside took `14F in the 89/90 freeze. It has been so long ago I don't remember, but I think there was foliage damage, but nothing lasting. It's a beauty now with about 15' of woody trunk. The fruit is killed when the temps fall around 25F or lower, but the foliage is undamaged. S. Riverside is the fastest growing Sabal I have.

Cold enough to survive here last winter, which is all you really need to know. My 6' CT was defoliated, but completely recovered by the end of summer. I harvested the fruit after the big freeze and have literally 100's of seedlings from the seed that was exposed to 4 straight days in the teens.

Martin: You are the gold stamp of approval when it comes to palm abuse. :) I planted a Riverside along with a Blue Jub and a BuJu in my front yard yesterday. Real excited about them.

BTW, I meant cold hardy enough. Spent the day doing my taxes, so...

The Sabal Riverside did better than my Jubaeas and Butia hybrids, but I doubt you will see harsh enough cold to kill any of them. Wish I could say the same.

S. 'Riverside' has never been damaged by cold in Augusta, GA. This winter was mild, but the previous two were unusually snowy and the 'Riverside' never missed a beat. It seems to prefer more water and fertilizer than my other Sabals and has a tendency to show K/Mg deficiency more than the other types.

I've put three Riversides in the ground. That brings the ole palm count to 143 in the ground. Hey, but who's counting?

Hi MJFF - does this mean you have 100's of Riverside seeds? ;)

I have 100's of seedlings, but no seeds. It was so hot and dry last summer that the tree set very little seed last year. The seedlings are from the seed produced in 2010.

Well not surprissing, Tampa seems to me pretty subtropical. Certainly when I see the plants in the back.

Well its certainly no Siberia...
