This bridge has been recycled and installed here in the last few years. Before that the river was there only means of transportation.

There are shops that offer wonderful things that the people of Brazil make. In this shop we found this spectacular shelf that was made from the buttress roots of a tree.

Would they consider this carry-on?

Wow that’s a great question, I want to say around 5, but I will have to verify with Dale the Zamia blood hound.

The one that we went to look for we couldn’t find due to the area that it lives was thrashed by a hurricane 4 months earlier. :(

Thanks for all the pictures Tom !

I happened to to be at Dale's with friends on the day the "Shelf" arrived and was brought into the house with the help of some of his neighbors workers.

This is the first time I see it in it's final position - what a spectacular piece.

I was suppose to be there to help unload it, but had to go out of town for a funeral. These pictures are at the co-op where Dale bought it. I have yet to see it in his house, maybe this week end.

Oh boy, I enjoyed those photos!. You must have had a great time. It reminds me of my trips to Ecuador, Panama, and Costa Rica. To have no other ' turistas ' other than yourselves at those

ruins must have been just incredible. What I remember most from those trips are the quite boat rides along the canals and rivers just looking at the vegetation and the wildlife with only the

sound of the motor.

Tom, I somehow missed this thread before. Thanks for adding additional photos. I was only in Belize one time on a cruise. While I was there I took a tubing trip on a river that flowed through a cave and then through the jungle. It was a lot of fun!

I really enjoyed the river photos. Looks like you had a great trip!

Such a great travel thread, how did I miss this one before? Your photos of the archaeological sites are absolutely stunning, as are the river photos. I am so glad you added photos to bring this to the top of the page again, thank you!

Tom,

I am sure glad you revived this thread! Absolutely outstanding coverage and photos! :) I missed it the first time back in October 2011 because I was in Tenerife, attending the IPS Board meeting. Incidentally, during that Board meeting we voted to give a grant to Belize Botanic Garden, part of DuPlooy's Jungle Lodge. Post #25. And, the IPS Board meeting in 2009 was actually held at DuPlooy's, where we stayed for several days. The IPS Directors with spouses and partners was the only group at the Lodge, so that was a very special experience. And we also made a number of excursions during our time there, and were very impressed by the Mayan ruins. Went to Tikal in Guatemala as well on a day-trip. So, it was a very pleasant surprise this evening to find your thread! Thank you for all the photos and commentary! :)

Thanks for your kind words. Our trip to Belize was great, but the best thins about Belize is the people. The country is easy to navigate and everyone speaks English and they are very nice. I can’t wait to go back with my wife, and do some diving as well.

Tom, I enjoyed viewing your numerous pics of your Belize trip. I agree that Belize is an interesting place to visit. Many years ago we four (me, wife and 2-kids) drove our camper van down there from San Diego, CA. At that time the road to Punta Gorda was not paved. Belize has come a long way since then. The Mayan sites in Belize are interesting but nothing in comparison with Tikal in Guatemala and Palenque in Mexico. For those who have the time, driving there and making stops along the way in Mexico (actually many more interesting places than in Belize) is a great way to sample the culture and sites of two countries. I guess it's time to make another visit as things have changed a lot since we were there. Again, thanks for posting so many interesting photos.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Belize was a blast. Make sure you see the amazing Tikal Ruins in Guatamala,20 mins from Belize. Ruins everywhere, mountains, jungle trails, incredible diving, nice people. As a bonus, it's an english speaking, US currency country. Im definitely going there again!

That's an awesome thread!

I had real trouble opening it though. Looks like the extra ? diamond caret character in the subject line causes Internet Explorer (or Edge browser) just sit there and not open it up. The URL is malformed due to this. It works fine with Google Chrome however.

MODS: Please edit the thread title to remove the character so it will work for IE/Edge as well.
