An Early Rain Season for California?

happ

Recommended Posts

The dying remnants of Hurricane Hilary began moving into California yesterday w/ scattered showers over Los Angeles though most areas stayed dry or just very light rainfall [uCLA picked up 0.14]. Possible thunderstorms thru Sunday. But the real news is the approach of two wet storm systems that will move ashore next week that could produce widespread showers especially in northern California. Our first taste of fall! :mrlooney:

Hopefully this rain season will be as bountiful as last year.

The first front of the season moved through the SF Bay Area today. It was a very weak system and I only receved drizzle. A much stronger system is due on Wed. and Thur. with significant rain. Temps are mild in the low 70's.

The front of the first storm has washed out, as predicted; falling apart south of Point Concepción. The ground is a little wet this morning but only 0.02 in the rain guage. All eyes are on the second more powerful storm that should arrive in southern California tomorrow afternoon\ evening w/ the possibility of rainfall exceeding an inch, hopefully!

Very nice storm for so early in the rain season. It started raining lightly this morning and by the time it ended late in the afternoon, I measured 1.84 inches. That is nearly twice the normal amount of rainfall for the entire month on average. The parched hillsides absorbed it quickly; no need to irrigate for a while! :mrlooney:

Back to more typical October weather into next week: warm & sunny.

I got 3/8". A very nice wet down for the dry canyons to mitigate the dust. There was no run-off.

Totally I think I got about 3/4." This aftenoon I had a cloud burst for about 20 minutes with thunder and lightening. It's all moved out now and supposed to warm up tomorrow. All the palms look lush and green with their first bath of the season.

October often produces the hottest temps of the year for coastal areas; many areas exceeded 100F\ 37.7C. Thankfully the wind is light otherwise fires would have broke out all over the place. :o

Another scorching day but a tad cooler than yesterday. Overnight temps, however in the foothills were very uncomfortable; Getty Center within 3 miles of the ocean, recorded a minimum of only 82F\ 27.7C  Tomorrow into the weekend should be much nicer.

It may or may not rain this weekend but it will certainly get cold. The first minimums below 50F\ 10C should occur; time to turn the pilot light on. :o

Sheesh, it's dry out now though. We had a santa ana here yesterday w/ 10% RH and a high of 89F. The greenhouse got up to 105F. Oops, I had closed it up a bit to create some warmth on those colder days.

A heavy line of rain just passed through the south central part of the county. Very heavy downpour for a few minutes. We don't see the red color that often.

Little disappointed in the rain total at my place: only 0.22. There were scattered heavy though brief showers this afternoon in the South Bay where I work. Maybe another system Sunday then clearing and warming next week.

I got just about .6" for the day. The whole place is wet and muddy and I thought for sure that the hillside had a good watering but when I was digging out some swales to help the water drain properly it was still bone dry about 1 inch down...amazing! Every year it surprises me how much rain it takes to actually water below just surface wetting

That's great, Matty. I read that San Diego county rec'd the most rainfall. Also know the reality that rain penetration into the soil can be disappointing. I have surface bedrock with pockets of clay on a steep hillside that tends to create water runoff.

What's great this year is that the hillsides are green from the earlier rainfall in October; maybe we will not have a fire season.
