Jim Denz Garden

Time: 1:00 PM

Location: 1085 Highland Circle

Los Altos, CA

The Jim Denz Garden, on 1/4 acre property, was started in earnest soon after the "big freeze" of December 1990. Existing Trachycarpus, Washingtonia, and Phoenix palms were barely affected by the low to mid 20s temperatures that lasted a week so, during the following spring season, Jim planted a few queens and king palms (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) that are very large and fruiting today. Over the years 90 additional species of palms have been added including some unusual for the area Roystonea, Licuala, Hyophorbe, etc. that were planted along with many other subtropical, cold hardy species, and hybrids. The Roystonea borinquena, and Licuala peltata have been in the ground six years with no winter protection.

The garden's theme is that of a Balinese/Costa Rican rainforest, constantly evolving as plants and trees continue to mature and includes dozens of multiplying bromeliads, ferns, philodendrons, flowering heliconia, bamboo, and a 22,000 gallon koi pond with waterfalls and bridge. A thatched roof gazebo resides adjacent to the pond and waterfall. Several smaller water elements grace the landscape as do several stone and concrete statues and pottery.

The Sunset Zone 16 Los Altos microclimate, being on the south end of the SF Bay, is mild in summer with a few hot days, is warm in the autumn, has cool wet winters with occasional light frosts in open areas, and is cool and wet in the early spring turning dry and mild by mid April. Heat loving palms grow slowly but palms from cooler regions like Parajubeaea, Rhopalostylis, Howea, and Archontophoenix, grow more rapidly.

The garden is mostly shady so, even if it's a very warm day, it will be comfortable. This will be a potluck. Please don't forget to bring what you would like to drink, and perhaps a plant for out auction.

From the North: Take 101 or 280 south to Rt 17 South then exit South on Rt 85 to the Camden Ave Exit. Take a right on Camden, right on Ewer, then a left of Woodford.

From the south, Take 101 North, take Rt 85 North toward Mtn. View, then exit on Camden Ave, take a right on Branham Ave, then a left on Ross, then right on Ewer and left on Woodford.

Park in the School Parking lot across the street. Enter the garden to the left of the driveway.

  • 3 weeks later...

We hope to see everyone at this, our last meeting of the year. Bring your camera, Jim's garden is perfect for pics, with lots of yard art, the giant koi pond and of course, one of the finest palm collections in all of Northern California.
