Saturday, July 23, 2011 Palm Society of Southern California Meeting, Garden Tour and Auction/Raffle

The Garden of Loran Whitelock in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles

Address: 4524 TOLAND WAY LOS ANGELES, CA 90041-3428

A truly legendary garden, by a founding member.

Admission to the meeting and garden open to PSSC members and their families only.

Join the PSSC for the first time, or renew at the door.

Our host, Mr. Loran Whitelock, started the garden more than 40 years ago. This is one of those gardens that show how good things can get better over time. The garden covers more than an acre, and is filled with mature palms and cycads, many of them very rare. Mr. Whitelock has had at least three species of plants named for him, including a palm, Chamadorea whitelockiana, and a cycad, Ceratozamia whitelockiana. Mr. Whitelock's palms include: the largest collection of Chamadorea species in the U.S., the tallest Livistonas in California, and many more, plus numerous Aloes, cycads and Platyceriums.

Mr. Whitelock is the author of the book, "The Cycads" published in 2002, which is considered one of the seminal works on cycads.

These are the crown jewels in a trove of many other gems. Bring your camera. Make a happy day of it.

Food! There will be a potluck at this meeting. Bring your favorite salad, appetizer, dessert, or main dish. Not sure what to bring? If you like it, someone else will, too.
